The DO 335 was probably the fastest, but I don't think it saw much, if any combat. The P-47 was probably as fast or faster as anything we had in straight flight. Wonderful aircraft, but a real gas-guzzler.

As this thread is moving more towards WWII aircraft here's a link to the Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary airshow at Duxford in 2010. The 16 Spitfire tailchase at around 36 minutes was impressive, aircraft everywhere. The video doesn't really capture it. The French air display at the very end was very slick. I made sure I attended both days.

"Tanks" were the name given to the project of the construction of the WW1 vehicles to disguise what they really were, armored vehicles. They wanted people to thank that they were building metal vessels to hold water or "tanks". But the name stuck and most armored vehicles are now called "tanks"

I believe that Disney was involved in that to some extent and maybe Walter Lanz of Woody Woodpecker fame. Some were simply the creation of talented service men who plied their trade on the nose of available aircraft.

XC-99 I believe that was parked at Kelly AFB Tx in 1954/5 with a cracked wing spar. It was said a piper cub could take off in the length of the fuselage. I think it was built using B-36 wings.
