B-25 was a medium bomber, not a heavy. A friend of mine was the pilot on the B-25 Heavenly Body when the did the reenactment of the Doolittle raid in San Diego. A little nervous he was the first one off.

The English used the other heavy a lot over the Atlantic for sub chasing. It had a far longer range than the best English and carried almost twice the bomb load.

The star of the show, in the battle of Brittan was the Spitfire. But its older, partly wooden counterpart downed almost twice as many German planes.

You're probably referring to the half track version of the "deuce and a half". That was the standard heavy army truck with 4 rear wheels (replaced with tracks for the half-track version) and 2 steering wheels. All-wheel drive via transfer case andnormally with front wheels not driving. **** on steering and tires if not needed.

B-24 was the other long range bomber, Not as pretty as the B-17 but very capable, I think most of them were made by Ford in some huge assembly building in Michigan.

Ah, the B-24 (Flying Bathtub). From what I read it was not a nice plane to fly.

My vote for the prettiest plane in WWII goes to the P-51 mustang after the modification that replaced eh humpback with a bubble canopy. P-51 was pretty much of a dog until they replaced the original engine with a British one.

The P-51 is the famous member of the family, but no one remembers the Mustang's sibling, the A-36 dive bomber. Ernie Pyle had an interesting chapter about them in one of his books.

Corncobs (R-4360) had 28 cylinders and 2 spark plugs per cylinder x 6 engines.

Incorrect starting procedure could foul all 56 spark plugs in an engine

You guys are sure keeping me honest. Shucks.

I was also wrong on the B36 being powered by R3350 engines. B36 used the 4360's.


With that said, I have to try again.
Was there ever a 5 engine B-17 ???

No has answered the difference in passenger seats, between military & civilian transports. These were regular type seats. Like in a DC-6. Not jump or hammock style seats.:confused3:

The 4360 was put in a fairly small plane, what??

Who or what company designed much of the nose art used in WW2??
