I think you got the B-17 (over 12000 built) mixed up with the 25, with just under 10000 made.
The Avro Lancaster was the heavy bomber that Britain used, not sure but I'd imagine that RAF crews used our aircraft on occasion due to logistics or losses.

When a WW2 Heavy bomber, most of us think of the B17. It was produced at a little over 9,000 We had another bomber that was produced at over 13,000. What was it. ???

The English produced their own when it comes to heavy bombers that is what they think of.
What was the name of it???

Did the English fly either of the American bombers ????

Lancaster. I have seen it described as "beautiful airplane" but to my eyes it looks awkward. "flying pencil" was the nickname of a bomber in WWII - could have been the Lanc but I think it was a German one.

Don't know if the brits flew any of ours but I would expect that they did.

You are 100% on the Lancaster.

B-25 was a medium bomber, not a heavy. A friend of mine was the pilot on the B-25 Heavenly Body when the did the reenactment of the Doolittle raid in San Diego. A little nervous he was the first one off.


The English used the other heavy a lot over the Atlantic for sub chasing. It had a far longer range than the best English and carried almost twice the bomb load.

Check Craig's List I've seen them on there fairly often. Prices way too high for what is more than likely a worn out old truck.
Think the guy selling them is in your part of the world.

Many of them were all wheel drive. Was the 10 wheeler still a duce & 1/2?? I don't know.

The Hurricane took a greater toll on the German Luftwaffe than the Spitfire but I didn't know it was partly wooden. The twin engined Mosquito was mostly balsa, birch, and plywood. The only Mosquito flying today was recently rebuilt here and earlier this year was shipped to its owner back in the States. I've got photos of it when it did a bit of a fly-around before being shipped.

B-24 was the other long range bomber, Not as pretty as the B-17 but very capable, I think most of them were made by Ford in some huge assembly building in Michigan.
