Anyone else? Hint: it worked like a modern day etch a sketch. But it was no toy. It was a rather important instrument.

James, was it some sort of wire recorder? I know they were used above ground to broadcast fake battle sounds. Not sure about any correlation to an etch a sketch....or what use they would have aboard a sub. Just a guess...

These old Gato and Balao class subs of WWII were more sophisticated than many would believe. As an example while the "fish" were in the torpedo tubes their gyro compass were constantly being updated from another device located in another part of the submarine. This was to constantly adjust the firing solution as the sub and the target moved. What was this device called and where was it located?

Keep in mind these torpedoes unlike old WW1 torpedoes did not have to be "aimed" by pointing the submarines torpedo tubes at the intended targets path.

The US subs had 2 devices that had distinctive sounding German names. Kleinschmidt..

What were these Kleinschmidt's, and why were they important on a US submarine?

On the day we were attacked at Pearl Harbor one and only one ship was ready, underway and at GQ with weapons armed and is credited with downing the first Japanese aircraft. What was called the "Flying Bedstead" What was it. There may have been 2 of them.

War emergency power was an over boost condition.
