Anyone else? Hint: it worked like a modern day etch a sketch. But it was no toy. It was a rather important instrument.

James, was it some sort of wire recorder? I know they were used above ground to broadcast fake battle sounds. Not sure about any correlation to an etch a sketch....or what use they would have aboard a sub. Just a guess...

These old Gato and Balao class subs of WWII were more sophisticated than many would believe. As an example while the "fish" were in the torpedo tubes their gyro compass were constantly being updated from another device located in another part of the submarine. This was to constantly adjust the firing solution as the sub and the target moved. What was this device called and where was it located?

Keep in mind these torpedoes unlike old WW1 torpedoes did not have to be "aimed" by pointing the submarines torpedo tubes at the intended targets path.

You guys may be getting tired of my Submarine tech questions.. I just really like reading about the old WWII boats for some reason, and I don't even know why... maybe read too many Robb White books as a child.:)

Alright one more fleet boat question for the night...

The US subs had 2 devices that had distinctive sounding German names. Kleinschmidt..

What were these Kleinschmidt's, and why were they important on a US submarine?

I would be a lot of fun on Jepeordy huh? "I will take WWII submarines for $600 please"

The P&W R2800 radial engine, which powered the F4U, the Hellcat and the P47 had a war "emergency" power system...What was it?

On the day we were attacked at Pearl Harbor one and only one ship was ready, underway and at GQ with weapons armed and is credited with downing the first Japanese aircraft. What was the name of the ship and where is she today, clue; it was not a Navy ship. I'll explain the circumstances that created situation later. HS

The POGO was a Vertical Take Off and Landing "airplane" It landed vertically on its tail..Quite a contraption. The "flying bedstead "was a British test vehicle to test vertical take of and landing and ducted thrust for the development of the very cool British aircraft called the Harrier.

No takers on the Kleinschmidt's, ?

It was one of those things that improved helped quality of life in American fleet boats, quite different than German "pig boats".

IIANM it was he training vehicle used by the astronauts training to fly the LEM. Very tricky, one of them crashed when the pilot 'lost it' and bailed off.

The Northrup P-61 was an WWII advanced night fighter. What was it's common name? (this should be an easy one)

The Kleinschnidt's on board the American fleet boats of WWII were the fresh water distillation units. They were critical to keep the battery water topped up and have fresh water to drink and also important so that the crew could bathe. German submariners did not have fresh water to bathe with... Think about that...
