Trouble Convincing Signifcant Other to Buy SCUT

What I do is get a firm price of what I want from shopping around, good for a few months or so. Maybe find sources on Craigslist or ebay, etc. Avoid new items.

Then I find small jobs or collect bottles and cans, buy and sell from estate or garage sales, plow a driveway, fix a neighbor's car, cut a field, fix a fence, restore a mailbox post. After a few months I have enough cash for a new (new or used) toy, a serious machine, any item on MY wish list.

Done. Since its my money to burn the choice is mine. She does the same. Regular pay or pension checks don't count (shared resources).

This process has produced a bass boat, a JLG Towable manlift, a worn-out diesel lawnmower that's been fixed up, a snowmobile, an antique railroad crossbuck (now working in the driveway), a 50 Bmg, a few vintage farm windmills, a pto generator and most recently a smaller inverter generator and lots of smalls. I buy clothes from Salvatore Armay's instead of new, save gas by eliminating trips and single runs. I do NOT cut back on things we do together (restaurant "dates") other shopping and her decorating tastes. Once you can show the value of the item in your wish list (including fun value and 'cool factor') she will trust you (more).

This process takes time (maybe years). Finding the jobs and the money actually becomes fun (sort of). Meanwhile, the Lowes mower could become a money pit. Charge her share the dealer cost but fix it yourself. Use it excessively. Same for the washer and dryer and her car.

The women use different thinking - tell her it is a lifetime investment, just like her, and it just shows the depth of your dedication to her! :cool2:

Tie a bauble to it.

I JUST went through what you did (8 mos. ago) - and hooked her on the landscaping projects I was going to do with the kids soon to flee the nest! No problem after that, as she is an avid flower gardener.

You came to the right place to help spend your money! Good luck....

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

P.S. - when I showed her the MMM auto-connect feature, that closed the deal with her hearing me complain less about my hips & back!

"Hand her the shovel and ask her if she could finish up for you until your vision comes back and the pain subsides."

Deerherd is spot-on.....one time wifey wants to help with a landscaping river rock job I had going (pre-SCUT). I moved a small dump truck pile via shovel & wheelbarrow (during my young, dumb 30's). It took me an entire summer. Anyway, she sez "let me help". I sez "ok".

She tries to take a scoop of river rock with the shovel, can't even budge it, drops the shovel & sez "I can't do this!", and stomps off to the house.

It really helps to let 'em convince themselves, cause they don't know machinery like we do (nor do they trust us, probably for good reason). Then buy 'em something nice too. Whether or not it's in the budget. Keeps 'em sold.

:dance1:

Once you have one, she WILL find things you need it for....the more you use one, the more you realize what you can do with it.

It is hard to justify. The 60" mowing deck for my Kubota BX cost more than some box store riding mowers. My wife never did any of the yard work or mowing, I did it all so it was easy for her to say we didn't need it. I'll say it is without a doubt the best tool I have ever bought. I almost feel like I couldn't live without it. I own a little over 3 acres and it gets used plenty. I also have a long driveway, about 600 feet long and we are expecting up to a foot of snow, so you guessed it, the BX will get used again. I went through a couple of cheaper riding mowers in 5 years and realize they just weren't going to hold up.

I am also a car person, I own a 2010 Dodge Challenger. I don't love this car more than my wife or kids, but hey, its a close second. If I had to choose between giving up my Challenger or my Kubota, I'd probably let the car go.

I just spoke to the wife about this, and she replied that having the tractor has opened up all sorts of new opportunities in landscaping. She says just having the tractor to move move bulk mulch in the spring is worth it alone. Of course we use it to build rock walls, clear brush and just for general lifting like heavy filled flower pots, pulling dead trees, plowing our road and driveway. We have had 5 tractors through the years together, and they have been major time and back savers for the both of us. And as you have pointed out the older you get the better the motorized wheel barrow starts to look.:) Plus the little BX or equivalent will be easy and fun for her to operate also. You will find all kinds of things to do with your tractor and you place will look better for it. Tell her my wife approves of the purchase, and she wants to call and talk to her, Linda would be happy to back you up.

One reason why I am not married and keep a GF at a safe distance! I can buy whatever the **** I want and don't have to spend time or one nickle on stuff that doesn't interest me or is a total waste of money!

A good used piece of equipment, well cared for will sell for basically what you paid for it. Try and say that for furniture or drapes! Did I say drapes, I meant window treatments . . . stupid!

If logic doesn't work just remember sometimes a man has to let a women know who's the boss in the household. Show her who is boss, and make sure you look up the number of a good divorce lawyer before hand.

First off your wife has to value the outside of your property. If she doesn't care about the grass, landscaping, or driveway, you are fighting a losing battle. Maybe if she cares enough about you and realizes how hard this work is, she still might come around.

I'm on only 2.5 acres. Been here 23 years now. Once I bought a real tractor I got more done in year than I have in all the others combined: cleared 1/2 acre, built a road (1000 tons of fill and stone), fence, stump removal, buried gutter drains, 2 retaining walls, buried propane tank, replaced septic lines,..........on and on

I used to have mulch delivered in bulk, 10 yards at a time. It would take me 10 hours to load by hand into a yard cart, take the site and spread. By the end of the day I would be completely beat. Now I can spread 50 yards in one day and only be half as tired.

But, if it's not important to her, you are in trouble.
