truck auxiliary fuel tank

I am considering an aux. fuel tank for my truck. The truck is a diesel. I already have a toolbox in the truck bed now so bed space loss is not an issue. Probably 75% of the time it has a GN traier hooked up anyway. I have been looking at the tank/toolbox combos from Northern. I was wondering if any of you issues with this type of tank I should consider? Does the kit they sell for connecting it to the truck's tank work?

I have a transfer technologies tank in my f450 PSD.. has a regular aluminum tool box setting aft of it.. and I have no space issues with 5th wheel rails or a GN adapter. tank is steel, has it's own pump on the side, and interconnects with the truck fuel gauge.. is pretty much auto magic.

I am trying to search for "transfer technologies" tanks with no luck. I see a lot of transfer flow, maybe that is what you meant. My stepdad has one of those and it is nice. I just wanted to gravity feed into the factory tank instead of pump it. I know some folks think that is illegal, but it's not. You can't gravity feed directly to the carb or injectors. Feeding into the factory tank is fine.

I had the the 60 gal tank/toolbox combo from Northern Tool in my '06 powerstroke. The installation was easy and it also carried a fair amount of tools. The only issue was it would cause the fault light to come on at times. I had a fifth wheel and goose neck hitch in the bed of my truck. You loose some floorspace, of course, however there are no issues with clearance. The box sits below the rails of the bed. The gauge is on the inside, so you have to open the lid to check the fuel level. I did not have any problems with leaks, nor did I experience any problems with the injectors or pumps. I had in in there for about 2 years before I sold the truck and never had any issues. You could go with the $1500 option and tie into the trucks electrical system and fuel gauge. However, I was very pleased with the tank from Northern Tool. I also had a super chips programmer and could clear the fault light. So, that was not an issue for me.

Someone else told me about the fault light. He said a mechanic at the dealership told him it was set up to throw a code if the fuel guage did not drop after 200 miles of driving. I was planning on putting a solenoid valve in the line that I could turn on and off from inside the cab. I was trying to stay away from the $1500 set up. I believe I can get what I want for about $800.

Edit: I believe the fault is only on Fords. Mine is an '09.

200 miles sounds about right for when the fault light came on. However, I never really kept track of it. Yeah, I think you could get the set-up you want for about $800. My '06 was an awesome truck. I really did not want to let it go. However, I have a 2012 on order that I will pick up when I return from Afghanistan:licking:

I might go with a midmount replacement tank from transfer flow this time though. Here is the website in case you have not found it yet.

I am a little jealous. I would love to have that new 6.7.
My brother in-law has a replacement tank in his 2011 F250. He did not want to lose the bed space. He likes it and it was easy to install when the truck was new. I believe his is a Titan tank. You might want to check them out also. I have never compared the two, just another option. I believe both are around $1200.

The ones I have seen pump from the aux tank into the vehicle fuel tank. When you get low you hit a switch and and turn it off when the gauge shows full. They seem to work OK.

I had heard that there was some issue with DOT approved, IE.. the Transfer flo tech was an approved setup.. though approval was not an issue with enforcement unless you were comercial and they were looking for problems.. or perhaps unless there was an accident and a lawyer was looking for a reason to lay blame. IE.. truck crash.. carrying extra fuel.. causes fire.. and extra prop damage or death.. then they look around and find a non approved diesel tank in the bed. etc. etc.

A real stretch I know... and it may not be an issue anymore either. the other co's may have gotten approved... just sayin what I heard... info could be quite dated by now.. or wrong when I heard it..

I believe they work good too. I just don't want to spend twice the money for no reason. If trhe gravity feed will work fine that is what I want to do. If not I may just have to beg the wife for a little more money.

I hate having to do that.
