I want it to fill automatically without messing with a pump. I travel a lot with horses and hate stopping every 250 miles to fill the truck up. The set up you mentioned would still require me to stop and fill it up.

Maybe I am just too lazy.:D

I also want a toolbox for a little storage space. Thanks for the input guys. It is much appreciated.

I take it you don't stop to eat or use the rest room?.. but instead.. perhaps drive 8-12 hours straight?

must be nice... you must be a young fellow with cast iron bladder, and perhaps travel -WITHOUT- your wife.

i take it they use some kind of float valve to stem the flow from the perched tank so that it doesn't run out your gas fill cap.. etc?

soundguy

Soundguy,
Correct. A float valve is used that will cut the flow once the tank is full. It is a add on piece that you add to the fill neck leading from the gas cap.

Yes, Northern Tool sells this in a kit to link the two together. That was part of my original question. I am not sure how these things work, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them.

Rasimmo,
As mentioned previously, I did not have any issues with the system I installed on my truck. I found it to be a very easy installtion. It took all of about 45 minutes. You will need to cut out a section of the filler neck and drill a hole in the bed for the fuel line to pass through. Do you have your bed coated with a line-x or rhino liner? The tank does have tabs to lock it in position. If I were to do it again, I would build a brace out of 2x4s and give myself a little more clearance to reach the shut-off valve at the bottom of the tank. Make sure you do not drill the hole in the bed too close to the tank so that you do not in advertently put a kink in the line. Do definitely only what to drill once:confused2:. Thanks for the info on the other line of tanks.

Thats what sliding rear windows are for. If you travel with your wife, have her crawl out the window lean over the edge with the nozzle and fill the truck up while your driving, and if she has to go to the bathroom, she has time while she's back there.

I can easily drive 6+ hrs by myself w/o stopping for a potty break. The wife and kids on the other hand usually need to stop about every 4 hrs. But not having to fuel up while doing the potty break saves 10-15 minutes of time that is not getting me closer to my destination. I have driven from my home in Eastern NC all the way to my parents home in central IA without having to get fuel!

I've done plenty of multi state / thousnad(s) of mile trips, and never found any issue with fueling taking longer than the other members having the potty break.

one person starts fueling while the other heads to the head, then trade off.. whoever is free, grabs food.

If anything might add a minute or two.. what's a minute or two in 40 hours of driving?

I've BTDT trying to skate thru a state on that last 1/4 tank of fuel knowing I have enough to make it thru, then poof.. the 3 hour traffic jamb starts and you are sweating bullets.. or that service station you normally stop at AND the next 4 exits are closed due to the recent hurricane ( BTDT in lousiana ).. or you pull into town and the all night truck stop is OUT of diesel, and the next station 2m down the road closes at 2am, and it's 2:15 already, thus you have to wait, pulled over till the station gets fuel at 7am, or the next one opens.

Periodic stops also let you do things like look at tires, hubs tie downs, cargo.. etc.. etc.

I'am all for iron man-ing it.. but sometimes it's worth it to stop, if for other than comfort reasons.

every situation is different mind you.. i don't drive out of state for 'vacations'.. if I am more than 2 hours from my house, i'm pulling a trailer and there is likely a tractor involved.. or other large cargo coming or going.

My f450 has an aux 50 gallon auto xfer tank in the bed, and when I leave on a long haul, i STILL carry 4 5g cans of diesel with me, plus a gas can, if it involves a gas tractor.. plus a full load of tools, small air tank and compressor, 2-3x the number of tie downs I may need, winch, extra battery, electric repair kit, tire repair kit, spares for anything touching the road, extra jacks and cribbing.. etc..e tc.

noting like being 1200m from home on a rainy sunday, holiday night and need something ya don't have :)

Putting fuel in my truck takes a minimum of 15 minutes. Plus me going to the bathroom adds time(wife won't fuel truck, I have to do it beginning to end) the wife and kids going potty and buying snacks(to last to the next stop) doesn't take that long.
I look @ the range meter once I get to 1/2 tank, and if I see it dropping rapidly or reaches 100 miles remaining, I stop at the next place I see. I travel interstate most of the time and have not seen where the distance between fuel stops is more than 20-30 miles so my safety margin works for me.Also I make sure if it is going to be an all-night driving session that I am filled up prior to the evening so i don't run out in the middle of the night. And I do have the time to do a walk around and check things out when we stop for potty breaks(roughly every 4 hrs)

I have driven from Anchorage AK to Surrey, BC(outside seattle) towing a trailer(gross wt 18K#) without an aux tank. there were 2 of us(1 driving, 1 sleeping in the quadcab) I had to stop every 4-5hrs to refuel, while it was refueling I checked everything over, re-fuel the occupants, and potty breaks. same length of time stopped but twice as many stops adds up. this trip was ~2400 miles and took 5 fill ups. with the aux tank I would have stopped for fuel twice and still have 1/2 a tank to go.

i made a trip thru texas about that same length, one other driver, doing the same.. he slept while i drove, we stopped about every 4-5 hours for food/potty, and went ahead and fileld up.

by doing that.. it didn't take 15 m to fill up since you weren't dry.

My wife doesn't pump fuel either.. but then.. I don't take her with me on a serious drive... besides.. she has a hard enough time driving her suv.. she's be certifiably dangerous with my dually and long gooseneck trailer pulling a full load. :) that's what driving buddies are for.

I got 3 guys that we constantly do the biddy system on drives with each other.. whoever is going out of town grabs one of the other guys..e tc.

again.. i'm not a vacation driver.. just a tractor hunter.. or in a few cases.. a-broken down-vehicle-in-another-state-retriever :) :)

that trip thru texas ende dup being a red-eye'er

and that was one where we did find ourselves on the side of a rainy deserted road in north west texas with a problem we had to fix ourselves.. at night, on a weekend, holiday.. :) as for stops every 20-30m. I think at one point we may have driven 4 hours and seen nothing but prairy weeds :)
