truck auxiliary fuel tank

i take it they use some kind of float valve to stem the flow from the perched tank so that it doesn't run out your gas fill cap.. etc?

Yes, Northern Tool sells this in a kit to link the two together. That was part of my original question. I am not sure how these things work, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them.

sounds pretty much like a toilet float or float in a carb. shuts off the fuel once at a certain level.. when it drops it allows refill to that level.. etc.

Soundguy,
I understand all that. I guess I should have asked if anyone knows how well they work. I have not heard of any problems withthem, but I figured it don't hurt to check before I buy it.

I just got a RDS toolbox/ tank combo 3 weeks ago (#72775). I just filled it up for the second time today, nice having 1000+ mile range! I got the gravity feed kit with it and it works great. It has a little one way ball/float valve in the T that installs in the main filler neck hose. It also has a shutoff valve at the bottom of the tank if you don't want it to automatically transfer. This model has the filler neck, fuel gauge and auxiliary hose for filling the tractors under the lid of the toolbox. Its a real slick setup, looks like a regular toolbox from outside and has the locking cap plus you can lock the toolbox itself. I did get the code from the ECU after the needle didn't move like it was supposed to, but my Edge Attitude is set to clear the code when I restart it. It works!

dntfxr,
Thanks, That sounds like what I was thinking of getting. I may get a little biger tank. I will have to measure the truck and see what will fit the best. It is a SWB, so I don't know how big I can go.

I have a transfer technologies tank in my f450 PSD.. has a regular aluminum tool box setting aft of it.. and I have no space issues with 5th wheel rails or a GN adapter. tank is steel, has it's own pump on the side, and interconnects with the truck fuel gauge.. is pretty much auto magic.

I believe they work good too. I just don't want to spend twice the money for no reason. If trhe gravity feed will work fine that is what I want to do. If not I may just have to beg the wife for a little more money.

I hate having to do that.

I bought a TransferFlow 40gal black steel fuel tank/toolbox combo and love it! I love being able to drive 1000+ miles before I fill up!
It is tied into the factory fuel gauge so the factory gauge shows the total fuel in both tanks. The controller then shows how much is in each of the tanks seperately and system status.
It is totally automatic, all I have to do if fill it up (ouch, if I run everything empty!) It works by reading the factory fuel tank level from the sender and once it drops 5-6 gal, the pump will turn on and transfer until the factory sender says it is full and turns off.

Maybe I'm missing a cheap answer, but what about a regular transfer tank and a electric pump and nozzle. This kind of setup is maybe $700 depending on what you get. It won't fill you truck automatically, but is that a big deal?

even cheaper than 700 sometimes at tractor supply.

and no.. not a bad deal, as if needed you could fill up your tractor, etc.

if I was putting an extra tank into my f350.. it's exactly what I would do.. a tank with the nozzle.

if I need more fuel I can stop and pump some fuel... etc. besides. i need to hit the rest room every 4 hours anyway.. :)

Yeah the one I got is only 40 gallons but I needed the space up top for my tools. The footprint is nice, it fits in front of the fenders out of the way of my hitch. It sits level with the top of the bed too so it's not in the way of anything. I paid 700$ for it plus the install kit.
