I was wonder how big of a truck I needed to tow 20 to 25,000 pounds, plus trailor weight, and be able to hold tools, air compressor and fuel tank in the bed. I was thinking a 1 ton daully or a Chevy Kodiak, I want 4 wheel drive and a crew cab. The trailor will be a goosenek, not sure on length yet.

A new F-350 or GM 3500 will get you in the 22,000# range, Dodge is back in the 18,000# range right now.
A F-450 will get you in the 25,000# range. GM stopped the Kodiak a few years back so you will have to go used with that.
GM, Ford, and Dodge all have Cab and Chassis models, 4500/5500 series that can do what you require. And then there is International, Volvo, ect.

You need something bigger than a 1T dually to haul 25K. I'm sure someone with a Kodiak or similar vehicle can tell you the tow ratings.
I don't know what state you are in but in some states you could drive a vehicle and tow a trailer up to a GCWR of 26,000 with a regular drivers license. Once you go over the 26K combined weight you need the class A.
As DP says, a 4500/5500 will get the job done.

After having pulled a 21k GVW 40 foot RV, I wouldn't personally use anything smaller than a 4400 International or a similar truck to pull that much weight. Any of the 550 size trucks will probably pull that weight, but the panic/emergency stop is where the bigger class 6-7 truck w/ air brakes will make you glad you "went big".

Certainly sounds like class 6 truck territory. The good news is that means you can get a good diesel engine (Cummins) in a Ford truck.

While a 5500 or larger truck would be nice its not necessary. The F-450 can pull about 25,000# and still be a daily drive with a bed. These new trucks with super powerful engines, exhaust brakes, great trannys, tough frames, huge brakes are plenty capable.
The big issue with a Class 5 or 6 truck is insurance. Even if for private use unless farm plated many insurance companies want a CDL or at least a driving course completed. Why set yourself up for all that when then new modern 1 tons and the F-450 can do the job.
Heck, my 06 F-350 is rated to pull about 18,000# and does so with no issues and is nothing like the new GMC3500 or F-350 that are rated to pull about 22,000#. Its only 4 years old and the new stuff is so much better. Its amazing what they have done with these trucks.

If you read what he said, it states he wants to tow "20 to 25,000 pounds, plus trailer weight". Last I checked, even a cheap trailer rated at 10-13 tons capacity was a good 5-6k lbs empty. Now your talking about 25k-30k lbs total, your not going to haul that behind an F-450. :laughing:

If you read more carefully, you'd see the OP wrote

So if his load is 25,000lbs PLUS trailer weight (that's probably another 7,000lbs), PLUS tools, compressor and fuel tank (that's probably another 2,500lbs), he'd have a gross payload of ~34-35,000 lbs. An empty truck built strong enough to handle that weight with a bed will way at least 10,000lbs. 10,000lbs of truck plus 34,000lbs is 44,000lbs of payload & trailer. Far beyond a F350/450 or 550.
There's also other truck brands that can handle that load other than Ford. Take a look at IH or Freightliner and stay away from small framed trucks. I drive heavy trucks every day. Stay away from a small truck for that kind of load. It makes the roads safer for all of us.

You are getting into semi truck territory there. The problem becomes the stopping not the going. A trailer that can tote 25,000 lbs safely, easily could weigh 8000 to 10000 lbs.
If it were me I would look at a smaller semi.... maybe like a beer/pop tractor. I know alot of horse haulers us similar trucks. Or I might just say screw it and get a Kenworth W900!!! hahahah! Good luck!
