We use a 4400 series IH with a 20,000 lb rear axle to haul a 20 ton float. You can get this truck in an extended or crew cab config for about $90K. Add $10K for an auto tranny.

Last I heard, adding 4X4 to a class 6 or 7 truck was a $15-20k upcharge when ordering a new one.
If I remember correctly, when I ordered my 4400 in '06, the crewcab and auto trans added about 15k to the tab.

I was wonder how big of a truck I needed to tow 20 to 25,000 pounds, plus trailor weight, and be able to hold tools, air compressor and fuel tank in the bed. I was thinking a 1 ton daully or a Chevy Kodiak, I want 4 wheel drive and a crew cab. The trailor will be a goosenek, not sure on length yet.
05rammer, have you researched gooseneck's with that kind of capacity? Most of what I see are rated 20-~22.5 gross. I am thinking you are getting into air brake territory. If so, the market for used 4x4's becomes tighter. Mostly you will find cab/chassis and no air plumbed to the rear or the back of the cab. Of course that can be added at an additional cost.

I think this was a good thread as your needs are at the extreme end and that always brings up plenty of "discussion". Plenty to learn for sure.

You don't have to get airbrakes on the trailer. Plenty of hydraulic braked trailers out there in the 10,15 or even 20 ton range. I prefer air brakes on the trailer, though.

Adding air & gladhands to the rear isn't very expensive.

My old 25+5 GN with tandem duals was rated at 25,000# It had dual 12,000# axles and electric brakes. It would stop on a dime behind my old 99 F-350 PS 4x4 and I had it load up many times. Dead simple but heavy. That trailer was every bit of 6,000# empty.

Ummmm....yeeeeahhh....ssssure.
To the OP: I wouldn't suggest pulling 25,000lbs behind a pickup because it exceeds the manufacturers GVWR by like 10,000lbs, but what's 5 tons over GCWR hurling down the highway between friends. :confused2: Yikes talk about a huge lawsuit......:confused2: make sure you put the house in the wife's name only if you're gonna make the roads unsafe like that. LOL

Back on topic: The 4x4 version is nice, but trust me, you give back in visibility over the higher nose, so parking/manuevering is tougher. I wouldn't suggest 4WD unless you really need it.
From experience with "real trucks" ;) : I'd get an overpowered, air-braked crewcab tractor and use it as a 5th wheel. Buy yourself a nice used Pete, KW, IH or Freighty with between 325-400HP and a Rogers lowboy and baby you're all set. No stress, no strain, no huge fines from the cops for making a pickup truck into a tractor trailer. :confused2:
Also, I would avoid the smaller displacement diesels as they are purposely underpowered for the job of towing heavy machinery. Ask me how I know.
