Truck Restoration

Were Cummins engines normally painted mustard yellow back then? I remember Cummins using tan as their paint color in the 70's. Until I saw the closeup showing 'Cummins' on the fuel injector pump I thought it was a CAT engine.

Great job and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished with the details you mentioned it still needs.

The engine color looks like Cat yellow but it's actually Cummins Old Gold. It was used in the '50's and into the early '60's when Cummins started painting their engines the tan color.

Very nice restoration. You are certainly an inspiration for us for those old trucks. :) I am sure you will get many years of enjoyment out of it as I know I would. :D

She looks great! Hard choice between the red and the green. Guess you did right going back to the oem color.

Chris
I'd never paint a red truck green but it's ok to paint a green truck red.

That is a great looking truck! I'm glad you shared the rest of the story on the trucks history after it was traded in, I was wondering how you managed to get it back. You should be really proud of it and I hope you get to enjoy it for many, many years.

Very neat looking truck! I've seen your previous photos of the truck in green paint and noticed that it had a headache rack of sorts with a winch. Are you going to re-install that or leave it off? I assume that the gin poles are a pain to deal with as they look to mount near the middle of the bed vs the outside edge which would enable you to lay them forward when not in use. Also, I noticed that it had some sort of a fabricated "cow catcher" on the front end before and now you have something that looks like a factory bumper. How did you manage to come up with that?

I've eliminated the winch. I had to remove the winch anyway for painting. I've installed an aluminum tool box instead.
That's a new factory bumper. I have a friend in San Diego that specializes in White trucks. He supplied me with the bumper, new steering wheel and windshield and rear glass rubber gaskets. I belong to the American Truck Historical Society and the Classic White Truck Group so there is some support for parts.

Not loosing site of it for 40 years is almost unbeleavable.
It would be interesting to hear how he was able to keep track of it for 40 years.

The dealership that owned the truck did all the servicing on the trucks Dad drove, from '55 through '88 when the company Dad drove for shut down. The dealership is also only 25 miles from where I live and I passed it every time I went to that town. I first started trying to buy it back in '04 but they wouldn't sell it. They planned on "restoring" it. It had been sitting on the lot for at least ten years. The driver's door window had been broken out and the floor was rusted out on that side. No one had tried to protect it. I left my name and phone number and they eventually called me about two years later. Just lucky no one decided to haul it off to the scrap yard.
