Truck tires

I have friends that swear by BFG's. Should be the only tire on the planet they say. I had some AT's and also some MT's some time ago. The tires worked great.

But... I found the sidewall to be squishy. I really noticed this when I got a large cabover camper.

I have Goodyear Duratrak's now; they seem to work pretty well, both while out towing the 5th wheel, and when on trails out hunting.

I really liked the Dick Cepek AT and MT, but they wore kinda fast; softer compound.

I put a new set of BFG T/A tires on my 1989 one ton Chev. in March of 1991 just before heading to Alaska, when I knew I was going to hit some snow. But I traded that truck that Fall, almost exactly 6 months later, so I don't know how long they would have lasted. But for the time I had them, I liked them.

And now on my old Ranger, I've got the BFG Radial Long Trail T/A tires. I just looked and see that they are exactly 4 years old today and have only gone 26,263 miles so far, so again I don't know how long they'll last, but I'm happy with them and this thread made me curious so I just went and checked and they still have at least 7/32 of the original 11/32 tread depth.

Check out the reviews of your choices at Tire Rack but I have to second the Bridgestone Revo's. We're in rain 9 out of 12 months and they handle great.

The BFG Commercial T/A's are great tires and reasonably priced. The absolute best tires I have ever owned in a 235/85R16 were the Michelin XPS, ribs on the front and traction on the rear. Steel sidewall, steel belted. If they made them in 225/70R19.5 I'd have a set on my truck now.

I've had the BFG's and they had great traction in mud and snow, but barely made 30,000 miles on my Silverado 1500 and my Ford F-250. The tire I like best is the Hancook MT's. Best traction, and lasted much longer than the BFG's. They are a little noisey, but all off road tires are. The Hanccoks are also much cheaper than the BFG's.

The old steeltechs were an awesome tire but the new version "transforce" or whatever are absolute junk. Nowhere near the milage or performance of the old.
I too vote for BFG's but if they are a little pricey for you, you could try the General Grabber AT2's. They have pretty much the same tread pattern as the BFG's. I have a set on my old Dodge and they have held up pretty well in the 20,000+ miles I have on them so far (and most of those miles have been high speed gravel road miles that really eat up the soft compounds). Real good traction in snow and mud.

These are what came on my 08 Nissan Titan Off Road. Love them. I have about 46,000 miles on them and they are holding up well. This truck tows between 7,000# and 10,000# a couple days a week and probably well over 1/2 its total miles. The tires are awesome in the mud and snow. But like you said, they are a little noisy.

Cool. I have a friend with an S40. I am on my 4th Volvo personally and my immediate family has had at least 12 between 7 drivers in the last 10 years.
We have had 3 which have saved the lived of their drivers.
