Before cranes suitable for trucks were available, I used to see variations of this system on trucks.

The only photos I found were military.

I’ve seen those for setting septic tanks but not for much else.

Used to see similar units on trucks or trailer mounted to carry and set pre cast burial vaults in grave yards.

I did a small one years ago with just a 4" pipe inside of a 4.25" pipe, adjustable boom length, #2500 electric winch, worked great but between the short height and the long tailgate I could barely lift over it, it did however work well for large rounds.

Modified the base of this 2 ton truck crane to work in hitch receivers and allow extra jacks to support/level. Made it where I can easily break it down into three pieces to move. Can load anvils in back of truck or lift heavy stuff onto benches in shop. It came with a nice roller thrust bearing in the base for rotation and jam bolt to lock.
Remember cranes are made for lifting straight up......not side loads.
