TSC paint sucks

One comment on the ISOs. While I am surprised something so toxic is sold at TSC or without extreme warnings, you can spray with a conventional full face respirator and bunny suit. 3M Organic vapor cartridges are good for the ISOs, but on a very strict change out schedule. Essentially, you get 8 hours max, then throw the cartridge out and start with a new one. Fresh air systems are much better since most people are not anally retentive enough to change out on schedule and keep track of exactly when a cartridge expires. Additionally, since ISOs do not have a "smell test" and by the time you smell paint it is too late the traditional methods of determining cartridge change won't work.

ISOs are highly toxic in small quantities and sensitization can happen quickly causing permanent health issues. Everyone should beware before using any two part paint combination and check the MSDS.

I am using a gravity gun, and follow that golden rule. Only enough thinner to get it through the gun properly atomized.

With mixing a pint of paint, and just about two tablespoons of hardener, the thinner is only about 2-3 tablespoons as well.

That sounds good.

I understand that the extra hardener, may seem to be helping you, but be assured, it's not the hardener that is helping. It's more likely the viscosity change, or some other effect that is resulting from adding it.

These products were made to be used without any hardener, so they should work fine without it.

Was painting inside a 75 degree wood heated shop, so I doubt humidity had anything to do with it.

Safety police here;

Not judging at all as anyone can do as they please if legal.

Be careful spraying/painting/sanding etc while an ignition source is present.

I always shut down the NG heater, welder, compressor. And fridge when spraying paints indoors.

I then ventilate the shop when done for 10 minutes.

Will wait a few hours ventilate again then turn the heat back on.

I have seen first hand (on a few occasions) what happens when all the pieces fall into place for an explosion.

Did you try a different tip? The right needle and nozzle is important too..

Thinner is the same thing as their reducer. IT is impossible to spray without thinning some.

And I had the worst runs when mixing as prescribed. It was only when I added MORE hardener that the issues got way better.

Their suggestions for mixing the hardener were 16:1. So I mixed 1 pint of paint with 1 TBSP (1/2 ounce), and just enough thinner for the desired viscosity to properly atomize the paint. Results sucked. So with experimentation, I had MUCH better results mixing about an extra TBSP of hardener. My mix ratio was closer to 10:1

Maybe it is possible that this paint is really picky and you need the absolute best conditions and perfect mixture to make it work??? But the point I am making is, using valspar, BPS and others, never had to worry about a thing. And after reading pleanty of negative reviews on other forums saying basically the same thing I am...........tells me it isnt just me.

Sounds like you did everything right and had perfect conditions and mixture. But from all the reading I have done, people having those good results with Majic are very few and far between.

One thing I learned in 35 years working in aviation is proprietary chemicals are always different in some little way.
Another thing is the dryness of the air. I have an air/water sperarator on the wall feeding the regulator and a moisture trap, with crystals that change color when moisture is present, down from the regulator. Then I have a disposable moisture filter screwed into the gun's fitting. I put new crystals in the trap the night before and the next day they had changed color, indicating moisture. So moisture can be present even in a warmed shop.

What rattle cans did you use for that repair?

I have yet to find anything in a one-part rattle can that resists gasoline. Other than marginal results with high heat stuff after its baked on.

I buy the Kubota brand rattle cans. Well worth the money and seam to resist gas.

I was in line at TS today and the guy in front of me was buying some paint,, The clerk asked the guy his age,, lol,, he came unglued almost walked out,, She said it was company policy but he still complained like crazy.. Finely he told her 1923 .. :)

They asked me my age when I bought a pair of small propane tanks. The lady said they were getting hate mail from mothers saying it was too easy for kids to buy this stuff an inhale it. Don't know if it's true but it sounds reasonable.

They may seem to resist gas, and some paints are better at it than others, but all one part finishes lack the ability to resist gasoline, (especially with ethanol in it), to any great extent.

In fact, even some low end 2 part systems do a mediocre job of resisting gasoline.

In this case, you do pretty much get what you pay for.

I have not found anything that affects Imron.

Yes, Isocyantes can be very dangerous. So can the dozens of other toxic, cancer causing chemicals in paint.

Most people who use iso hardeners for a living, do a very poor job of protecting themselves from them. You can go into almost any body shop, and watch the painter open a can of hardener, pour it into the paint, stir the paint, put it in his gun, then put on his respirator to go spray it. Amazingly this procedure ignores the fact that the whole time he is breathing concentrated fumes from the can of isocyanate hardener he just opened.

I would never do anything that ignorant, but most painters do. They are not dropping like flies from this stupidity, or the improper care, and exposure times for their respirators either. :confused3:
