If you've got heavy soil, back fill those posts with pea stone or crushed rock. they will stay put and stay straight. Should your lay out change, you can easily pull the posts and re use.
If I were buying only one auger, I would invest in a 12". Even with 4x4 posts roots, rocks and buried junk can divert all but the heaviest machines. Most 3PT augers use gravity to pull the cutting edge into the soil so it's right the first time period.
Another tip I've learned over the years is after you've reached your target depth shut off the PTO and pull the auger. Pull your tractor ahead and spin off the soil. This technique seems to provide a cleaner hole at least in heavy conditions.
