Turf Tread

/ Turf Tread #4
I have turfs on my 4410. They work well enough in snow that I can stall the motor if I get to rambunctious.

Anyone use turf tread for snow removal?

If your tractor is mostly AFTER the plow, then turfs work very good as they offer tread sipes vs large blocks with no tread. If your having to drive through the snow first before it gets plowed, it depends how much snow you get. In my conditions, I would chose turfs again.

Iv'e runs turfs as well and they work pretty good on snow, ice forget about it unless it's really cold! After the winter we had in Michigan, never seen so much freezing rain. I'm thinking about getting a set of chains before next winter hits.

On my folks small lawn tractor I run hillbilly chains for snow blowing.
It has turfs, they suck on slick ice/snow.
They are also 20 years old, I think they were better when new.

I just use whatever cable I have laying around, cat 5, rg59 etc.
The rear wheels have 4 stamped holes in them.
I take some cable, loop it through twice and tie it off tight.

Makes a world of difference, takes only minutes to put on and seconds to cut off.

They are not perfect, but I got tired of getting stuck with a spinning tire (open diff) one snow storm and had to find something.

Doesn’t cost much and effective enough I have been doing it for years now.

This is how I use turfs in snow,,,

even in 4WD,, this tractor can not go up the slight grade in my front yard without chains,,,

This pic shows where the tractor stopped,, without chains,,,

I find this interesting. I don't doubt that you are having problems with traction but this isn't my experience at all. I can push snow with the front end loader till the motor stalls if I'm not careful. The snow is pouring over the bucket in about 18" of snow and leaving about six inches for me to push through with the tires.

Yes I have the weight of the front end loader but you have weights and we both have 4x4. I don't get it.

My tractor won't get out of it's own way with turfs.

I put chains on just the front & it goes everyplace I have asked it to & pushed a front blade or drug a rear york rake plowing snow.

Don't understand why turfs don't work for me.

Not all turfs are created equal. The Titan turfs on my TC33D were a good tread design and deep. Remember those old diamond tread turfs from years ago....those were not good. Turf tires that are old, dry, and hard as a rock should not be compared to modern tires either.

I don't get it.

I do,, the snow in the south is WAY heavier,, because our temperature is higher when it snows,,

Around here, run into 18" of snow,, it can stop a a R1 tire equipped 40HP tractor.
I know that is true, because it happened to my 40HP IH tractor,,
The next year, I bought the 4WD IH 584,,,

We need a storm to form in the Gulf of Mexico to bring us enough moisture to make 18" of snow,,,

I've had turfs for 18 years. They work very well for us. My machine is only 1500# with maybe 7" of ground clearance and I can drive in 15-16" of snow before I have issues. I use the machine to drive around the yard a couple times to make tracks for cross country skiing. My machine is hydraulically articulated with a hydraulic wheel motor driving each wheel. The front and rear tires are all the same size, and the rears follow in the front's tracks exactly, so maybe that makes a difference.

Uhmm. This may be why I have such disdain for turf tires on most any surface. Years ago my B8200 had the diamond tread turf tires that were the worst traction tires I have ever used.
Since then I have always used r4's.

I also have turf tires on my power trac and it goes better in not too deep snow than my other power trac with ag tires. In deep snow the ag tires are a little better. But like others have said new turf tires are better because the rubber is softer and the tread edges are not worn.

Another turf tire user in winter. As already mentioned, the turf tires of today are not the diamond tread of years ago. The turf tires on my Kubota are a deep "S" shaped tread pattern that work very well in snow. They also work very well on the hard packed snow after I snowblow. The rear tires are loaded with Rimgard beet juice which helps. 20180413_220705.jpg

I never had too much traction with my JD 770 with turfs using a front blower. If I went over a slight embankment, I was done. Maybe some more weight hung on the back would have helped.

I had sleepless nights when I got my Kubota Wheel Loader with Turfs, but it hasn't been bad at all. Dry, snow covered Ice is the worst.

Not sure if there are radials and not, in turf.

you really need to wonder why they are called "turf tires" and not "Snow or all weather tires" Hmmm!.. maybe they are not designed for snow/ice??..

My first tractor I had for 9 years had turf tires. Worked great for snow removal. They had some sideways bite vs. almost none from the industrials. Industrials are much tougher for FEL work. Had flats on the turfs and eventually had to replace them.
