I bought a tuthill 12 volt transfer pump at a auction the other day for 37.00 it looks to be a 1200c model. The pump has never been used but someone has removed the pick up tube assembly from it, by unbolting the flange were it bolted to the bottom of the pump, I believe their is supposed to be a check valve inside the part that is missing. My concern is does the pump need this or can I use it without the check valve. I'm planning on mounting this to a 48 gallon tank off a grain truck that was mounted under the cab with the built in step, so the lift height for the pump will only be 16" at most and that's only if the tank was near empty.

If the pump will have a positive suction head (level of tank fluid is above pump) I wouldn't worry about the check valve. The check valve is most likely to keep the pump primed and prevent drain back when in standby.

No the pump will be mounted on top of the tank just like a normal transfer tank.
