I am finishing up my 3rd function install on my Kubota L39 and it is time to decide on a coupling standard.

I currently have a grapple bucket from a skid steer that I believe has 3/4" flush face couplers. Is this "typical" on skid steers? Since I have to buy couplings to either match the tractor this this or this to the tractor I just assume buy what I am most likely to encounter on a FRONT 3rd function: skid steer.

Does "standardizing" on 3/4" flush face make sense?

Yes, it does make good sense. Most rental companies in this area use the flat face type. I would check what they use in your neck of the woods. Maybe I am wrong but my flat face couplers seem to release better and do not leak as much when not coupled. Downside is they are alittle more costly upfront.

I have noticed the cost, but I really can't avoid all cost as I have 2 different standards and they won't work currently. So I figure if I have to spend something, spending an extra $20 now seems to make good sense.

At same time the skid loader manufactures elected to use a standardized Quick Attach system they also included standardized hydrualic couplers, 3/4 flat face, so if you are going to be using or renting skid loader attachments that is what you will find on them.

That is great to know. In a weird twist of fate a buddy walked up and handed me a brand new pair of Iso Series A couplers...FREE.

I'll let you guess what is on the tractor/bucket now

The 1/2" (nominal size) flush-face couplers are the most common.

The HT Series from DiscountHydraulicHose.com meet all specifications for ISO 16028 and interchange with Parker FEM, Snap-Tite 754 Series, and Faster FF Series.

The ones we sell the most are 4HTF4 (1/2' female with 1/2" NPTF thread) and HT4F4 (1/2" male with 1/2" NPTF thread). You can buy a complete set (1 male, 1 female) for less than $50 at ISO 16028 Flushface Quick Couplings

I should add, be sure to double check what "size" you have now. Coupler sizes are nominal, and it can be difficult to identify what you have. Simply measuring the coupler won't tell you what size it is.

This size chart should help.

Hydraulic Hose Guy,

1/2 will flow as much as 19 GPM's.

3/4 will flow up to 39 GPM's

Are you talking about the thread size/hose size or face opening size.

My JD 110 TLB uses 1/2" flush face couplers.

Given the 19 GPM capacity of the 1/2" size, you are never going to need anything bigger on your L39.

The 3/4" couplers are much more expensive than the 1/2" versions.

Neither. I'm referring to the manufacturer's nominal coupler body size.

Nominal sizes can be confusing, and that's why I included a link to the size chart. As it turns out, none of the measurable dimensions of a 1/2" coupler are actually1/2". This is because the nominal size doesn't refer to any outside dimension on the coupler, it refers to size of hose or tubing that coupler is most often used with.

In summary, the only reliable way to identify the size of your coupler is to mate it with a coupler of known size or to match it up to the size charts I linked to in my earlier post.

Not to disagree, but if the male center part of the tip is pressed in, the hole should be 1/2 in for a 1/2 in QD. It is not hard to distinguish between a 1/2 and a 3/4 in QD. Different manufacturers make the sleeves smaller or larger to suit the purpose of the QD.

The price between the two sizes is a big difference.

My original intent was to try to standardize off the skid steer (appears to be 3/4 flush face), but I found out they are QUITE pricey. A buddy showed up with some FREE 1/2" ISO A couplers so they are what is getting installed.

If I ever happen to borrow or rent a skid steer attachment, I will deal with the fluid loss to change out the couplings.

You could go ahead and pre-make some 1/2 to 3/4 adapters. 1/2 on one end, and 3/4 on the other. Male/female, whatever.

Some of the skid steers have low flow and high flow, and therefore the 3/4 flow ability off the aux pump.

No fluid loss. Just snap in place.
