Poison Oak, pic 1. The long bare stems are a first warning to keep clear. Size can be from low shrubs like this, to large vines that can choke a tree.

Poison Oak, pic 2. Often appears among other plants in a dense mat. It has three leaves, but so does unrelated wild blackberry in this photo.

Poison Oak is distinguishable by the waxy texture and the tendency to turn red early in the season. Also smooth edges on the leaves. By midsummer its leaves are more waxy and often red, so easier to note.

Well I got it on me again over the weekend. Made sure I was all covered up though. Shirt tucked in and jeans on with snake chaps. I did were a t-shirt instead of long sleeves. To dang hot to were anything else. Figured I can deal with it as long as it stays on the arms.

Just started itching some today on my arms so I know it's coming again. Have to get the bleach out and see how it works again. Got it from picking up old wood piles over the weekend. I ripped the old vines off a few months ago while I was in the process of cutting it up but you still always have the hair like particles that sticks to the bark and I figure that's where I've got it from this time. Pain in my butt!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif . In the mean time stay out of the Poison Ivy!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

TMAC: you say it's a pain in the butt? then I suggest bringing TP into the woods or not wipeing using PI! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Spiker that would be awful for something like that to happen I couldn't imagine the aggravation it would cause. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"Crossbow" from Dow AgroSciences.

I use it on poison ivy, honeysuckle, and multiflora rose. Does not kill grass, so can be used in pastures, lawns, barn lots, etc.

$65 per gallon, but mixes at the rate of 2 oz. per gallon of water.

I apply it with a 25 gallon tank sprayer that I carry in the FEL of my tractor.

Firewood? You sure you want to burn that stuff? You might get a worse case from the smoke!

I'll keep an eye out for the Crossbow. Where do you normally buy it?

Last night, right after the rains stopped, I suited up in a tyvek suit, similar hood, glasses, dust mask and latex gloves. Went out and hogged about an acre of brush that had quite a bit of PI strewn throughout. Sure hoping the new neighbors didn't see me!!

The potentially coated items that could be disposed of, were, reusable items were decontaminated with Technu, and then rinsed again with soap and water.

Any exposed skin under the tyvek was decontaminated with Technu and rinsed with soap and water. Then into the shower I went. Top to bottom suds, rinse and repeat. I've decided to use shampoo in the shower in lieu of soap (at least for the first two suds and rinse cylces). I figure that shampoo is good at getting rid of oils in hair, maybe it'll work for PI oils. I don't have enough hair left on my head to use that much shampoo anyways, so a little extra for the rest of my body isn't a big deal! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We'll see how it goes. So far in the last week or two, as we've been clearing previously felled trees, I've been stromping through more PI than I've ever imagined. The wife and both kids have been in it too, and have been taught my decontamination procedure. Something I wish my parents would have done with me 30 years ago!

I've got a single blister or two that have appeared, and that's about it. Kids and wife are fine.

Now the trick will be to clear enough of the PI so that when our two German Shephards start chasing each other they don't get it on their coats.

No... I'm not planning on burning it. It's just what I've got cut up from clearing off some land. I've relocated the wood piles elsewhere on my property so I can start the driveway. There was only a few trees out of the mess I cut down that had vines growing on them so I've been able to keep tract of what not to burn so far. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
