Ultimate Turf Roller

Nice looking fab work. I like the segmented rollers. I'll throw out another idea for a roller. Many years ago I helped a buddy build one for our grass runway. The rollers were a little smaller than yours, maybe 12"-14" but there were 4 of them in tandem. So the rolling area was about 8' wide by 6' long. the axles for the rollers were in bearings on heavy channel down each side. The idea was to carry each roller over small low spots and more weight on high spots. Filled with water it took a good size tractor to pull and we had to get well off the runway to turn around because of damage to the turf. Going straight down the runway it was amazing, smoothest grass I have ever landed on.

When building a roller like this what is better to use, a larger say 24" diameter tube, or a smaller 12-14" dia tube for teh roller? The larger diameter would certainly roll easier...

The only reason I went with 16" diameter pipe for the barrels was that was the largest diameter pipe the local steel shop could cut squarely for me on their bandsaw...otherwise I would have gone at least to 18".

Although, I am not sure how much more roller my BX1500 could pull!

Aeration is a must AFTER rolling. I used a 48" 3PH Turfvent core aerator...works really well.

Then why do you roll ?? to get more seat time ?? :p

Agggggggggggg.....I'm blinded now!!!

Nice job!! I am planning on building a roller from LP tanks(We covered that on an another post). If you are worried about compaction you could weld triangle steel plate and aerate at the same time. Roll and aerate at the same time!!

Great job!!! Love your design.
This couldn't be more timely as I have just tore up my 15 acre pasture here in East Texas and am about to sprig it with Tifton 85 (going to use a manure spreader) and will need some way to roll it into the soil.
I would like your permission to duplicate what you have done. I will use the 18inch version you said you would have built as I am in the middle of oil country and it isn't a problem here for pipe or someone to cut it.
Would you have any sketches of you roller that you can post or send. I am particularly interested in how you dealt with the axle portions. Any additional photos would also be extremely helpful.
What colour are you going to paint it? Green or Orange?
Nice to see a creative solution to the problem.....Like the blue box in the background as well. You might also want to copy your post over to the WeldingWeb projects forum. I know the boys over there would really appreciate your efforts.
Thanks again for sharing your project with us.
Regards.
Glenn.
