Von, this is certainly an interesting thread. I think here on TBN was the first time I'd heard of that rust removal method. Is that method actually faster, easier, etc. than a sandblast (or glass bead) cabinet?

It is much easier, just set your item to be cleaned in the electrolyte and forget about it for a few hours. It seems to remove all the rust even on the inside where blasting would not be able to reach. It is slower time wise, as you have to wait for the process to work. But less labor intensive. What I like to do is throw what ever I am cleaning into the blast cabinet after just to etch the metal so the paint sticks better. I just give it a quick once over to rough up the surface. I figure it can't hurt, and it removes the last of the black residue that is part of the process. I was quite impressed the first time I did it. I can see there always being a need for blasting, but this is a great way to remove rust if you don't have the equipment for blasting.

If you've a mind, tell us about the Cab. You've intimated that it will take some doin and dollars. Just what exactly are you faced with if it's not too painful too think about and share?

OK not much to report, the wife has had me doing other things that have cut into my Unimog time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I have been spending some money on it though. Just got the clutch back after having it refaced and a new lining put on the disc. Only cost $250.00. Sure beats buying new parts at $975.00. Attached is a photo.

Here is a photo of the springs both before and after. The top left is before using the electronic rust removal on them, the top right is after. And of course the bottom is after the powdercoating. The shorter springs are the front ones.
I'm still waiting for my rear axle parts to show up so I can get that all back together. Hope to drive it by this fall, so I'll have to start working on it soon! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

No, not at all. Thats the great thing about it, it seams to only attack the rust. I have done parts that have a clean machined surface and they come out just as they started. There is no real heat build up when doing this. Yes the water gets warm, but not that hot! It just takes some time to do it, thats the only drawback that I have noticed. Plus you can only do parts as big as your tubs. I have seen photos of a guy who did a whole trailer frame. He had to make a large tank out of plastic and had the anodes suspended all around and thru the frame. Took 36 hrs. to remove all the rust. I think you can find it in the link on rust removal in one of the earlier post I did.
