Untreated lumber for uncovered deck?

I have two small decks - 12' x 16'. Both are uncovered and are decked with untreated pine. Built along with the house in 1982. Both are still in fine shape.

I think it has to do with the fact that we are so very dry here.

My deck will get a lot of sun. High humidity. A good bit or rain. Times of drought (like right now). Like my front steps, probably nothing short or teak or redwood will hold up for long periods in such conditions.

Mill doesn't ship until December and it will take time to cut and dry whatever I decide to use. So I've got time to ponder all this.

And in reality, since this will be a fairly small side deck, even total failure won't be a catastrophe.

Great attitude! You might lose look into solar dryers for lumber; I have heard of some great results.

I look forward to hearing how your deck progresses!

All the best,

Peter

You don't need to dry lumber off the mill for outdoor use for very long.

I wouldn't waste my time putting it in a kiln.
