Would anyone here at TBN know or recomend a boat site along the same lines as TBN? Maybe a FOUR WINNS group maybe? The son is looking at a 89 22' sundowner made by four winns that looks outstanding for such an old boat. Any help would be much appreciated . I dont have a clue what to look for as in tell tell sighns of something about ta swarm on it. Out side of looking and checking for a rusted gas tank and basic engine check up I aint much help to him. 4K seams like a deal on this good looking rascal! Thats what scares me most! Any help from the boat folks here would be greatly appreciated for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes, it does, but I'm sorry I can't help with your question.

Try this boatus buying guide

Some things off the top of my head:

Salt water/fresh water use?
Moored in water or trailered?
One owner?
Maint. Records?
Hours on Motor?

The biggest unknown is usually the condition of the fiberglass, especially if the bottom has been painted. You may want to spend a couple hundred to get a marine surveyor to look it over for you...

The best place to buy a used boat is in Michigan - Fresh water & a short boating season = top quality used boats...

Four Winns is a boat with a good reputation. As others have stated however the way it has been treated and if its been in salt water will have a bearing on its condition. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I spent many a night camping on those islands, running trotlines at night and fishing and swimming during the day when I was a youngster, but I guess the last time was about 43 years ago. About 26 years ago, I was up there just for part of one day and noticed some picnic tables and such on the islands. There were not facilities of any kind when I used to fish there.

The big thing to worry about when buying any used boat is the outdrive. When it goes, it's big bucks.

If it's an outboard, good luck. You might have a great deal, or a dud.

Be sure to take it for a test drive. Lots of folks buy boats and never drive them first. It's the craziest thing. Pay for the fuel and launch fee, if you have to, but be sure it will really operate when in the water.

Do you know the two happiest day's of a boat owner? The day he BUYS the boat and the day he SELLS the boat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You've got that right, Eddie. Last fall, I lost power to my prop about a month after striking something underwater. Damages: $3100. This is just for the upper part of the lower unit on a 190 HP Mercruiser. I could almost buy a decent used boat for that.

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thats what I have heard too. EGON called it too , the ol money pit . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I will stick to my 14' lowe flatbottom with a 20 hp evonrude . not much that a stick of J.B.WELD putty cant fix on it. Or a new coat of O.D.green and she is as good as new.

In general, I certainly think that's right, but I bought a used, one year old, bass boat in 1978, used it 3 years, and in spite of spending the money for a bilge pump, seat improvement, new spare tire and wheel, etc., I made a profit of over $300 when I sold it. That might possibly have been the only time I ever bought anything, new or used, and after using it, sold it for more than I had invested.

Here are a couple of links for ya. Speedwake has alot of big fast boats, but there is also a technical section where some pros answer questions about boat problems. Heres a link: Speedwake From here you'll need to go into the forums. The open forum is a good place to ask general questions about buying a particular boat.

I'm posting this other link because you are down in OK. These folks have a site which is mostly populated by folks who boat at LOTO (Lake of the Ozarks). The pics they post make the lake look HUGE and a awesome place to boat. Here is the link: MidWestBoatParty a fun site overall. Lots of pics.

Good luck.

I have had great luck with my boats with the ski boat being 18 + years old and the bass boat being 15+ years old.

While buying anything new is a risk but it would cost me 40-50+k to replace what I have in two boats which I paid 15K for the both.

If you have access to newsreader groups there are many news groups out there that offer a lot of useful information.

As Eddie mentioned the big thing to watch out for and check into is the outdrive and gears. The motor in not a lot different to work on than a car.

Good Luck Jeff
