Hi folks, I live on the border of a state so I could save quite a few tax $ by shopping across the line. Here are my choices:

1) Brand new L3830 HST, LA723 loader, L2203 Joy, L2263 bucket, woods 6' boxblade, R4 tires -------------$21,470 NO TAX
This place is about 40miles from my house and across the state line. I haven't been there yet so I don't know about the parts/repair departments.

2) Brand new L3830 HST, LA723 loader, L2203 Joy, L2263 bucket, Woods 6' boxblade, R4 tires--------$21,450 + TAX
This place is about 35 miles from my house inside my state. They have a fully stocked parts dept. and say that their mechanics have been around and know their Kubotas.

They said they'd be happy to service my tractor even if I didn't buy it from them, but I'm sure I would wonder about the price I'd have to pay for not purchasing from them.

3) Used 1999 L3710 HST with Kubota loader, 300+ hrs. Looks pretty good, haven't been on it yet. $16,450 + Tax + $600 for a new boxblade.
This tractor is at the same place as #2.

Kevin,

A word of advice. You buy a tractor in another state and by law you are to report it in the state you are residing in. If you ever get audited you will get taxed. If the dealership that sells you the tractor is audited they will come and check you out. Buying in another state only releives you of the tax in that state, not in your own state.

Call your accountant, he would tell you the laws in your state.

just my 2 cents worth

Thanks for that "heads up" Murph. This is something that I didn't realize. I'm sure this must vary from state to state huh?

Where do they draw the line? ie: what products. If I buy something through a mailorder catalog and have it shipped here I don't pay tax on it.

On smaller items it is easy to get away with. But when you are dealing with a larger purchase such as a $20,000 tractor they will want their money. Cars are controlled by the licensing. You buy in one state but you license it in another, you will have to pay the sales tax at that point. I own a business and I do have to report out of state sales or installations. Anyway what I am saying on a purchase like that, make sure you talk to your accountant or the tractor dealer since he is on the border would be able to answer that.

but if y ou can get away with the sales tax, that would be a big savings.

I agree with Murph. Check the laws in your State. Your profile doesn't say what State you are in, but many States have agreements with neighboring States to report major sales. Some States, like VA, don't charge sales tax, or have a reduced tax, if the tractor is for agricultural use.

You could buy quite a few toys -- uh, implements /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif-- with the $5K difference, even after paying sales tax. To me, the L3710 sounds like the best deal. 300 hours is hardly broken in. Just my 2 cents worth.

The nice thing about the L3830 or even the L3430 or L3130 all have available to them a much higher capacity loader then does the L3710 have and with 4 bar linkage allowing much greater bucket angles. Other things are not as considerable although the 3 pt. hitch lift capacity is much increased. I had considered the L3830, it gives you larger rear tires, a little more HP, but I needed neither so I am considering the L3130 or L3430 instead. I have looked at other brands but spec for spec, they just don't stack up to the L 30 series. The tax issue is true. In our state, although you don't have to license the tractor, there is a "use tax" you are expected to pay. I paid mine voluntarily since I bought it out of state. If you take out a loan, your state may find out via the loan process and simply send you a bill to pay taxes. If you don't take out a loan, you may still be found to be in ownership via various ways. One of my local dealers may have gone as far as to notify the tax agency on me. It's a big sore spot with some of them and understandably so, it really hurts their business. Rat.

As Murph stated the tax liability does go with you and the state you reside in. I speak from experience I bought mine across state lines actually he was closer to me than any in my state. I thought I was saving some big bucks, one and a half years later the consumer use tax bill arrived with penalty and interest tacked on. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Oh well live and learn.
Good luck I think in your case go with the dealer you feel most comfortable with.

I have a L3710DT that is one year old and my uncle just bought a new L3130HST. The new Grand L 30 series has some convenience features that put it ahead of the old 10 series, but the 10 series is by no means out of the running. The two things that I really like in the new 30 series are the hood that raises instead of panels that come off the sides and the three point arms that adjust for length to simplify hookup are now standard equipment. The loader frame on the 10 series looks stronger since it is braced to the grill guard and the internal lift and power steering cylinders would probably be less susceptible to damage. Drive them both, look them over and form your own opinion.
Oh, I almost forgot, the new 30 series has a cupholder! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a 3710 with HST and looked closely at the newer models and could not justify the increased cost. The HST works great for hooking up implements so the new 3pt links didn't impress me. I also didn't like the new style hood. I think it just looks funny. My dealer wanted 2000 diffrence between my 3710/FEL with 150 hours vs the 3830/FEL. My dealer can sell the L 10 series tractors as fast as he gets them because it has been tried and tested for years. The new model with all the electronics scares some folks. They think the more automated it is the more expensive and frequent the repairs maybe.

I would drive the 3710 and 3830 see what you like better. After 15 years that 5K diffence in price won't matter much, if you get the tractor you want.

$5,000 is a lot of cash, might be a good idea to take a closer look at the used model?

I traded in an L3710 HST on a 5030 HSTC. I liked the 3710 but of course I like the cab better. I never had any trouble with the 3710 and used it in our hay operation as well as for mowing and FEL work. I traded it in and it cost me about $4,000 to run it basically 4 seasons. I would recommend a 3710 Hydro except that the newer Kubota's have a different front axle setup which is a vast improvement over the 3710's axle. The 3710 uses a pittman arm type actuator for steering, while the newer tractors use a ram type actuator. The 3710' actuator was getting sloppy at 400 hrs. I was considering removing it and machining a bronze insert to alleviate the problem. If you go for the 3710, lay under the front of the tractor and have someone turn the steering whell back and forth while observing the cast arm that attaches to the steering pump to see how much movement there is in it. A little movement is acceptable, however, very much movement will equate to wheel shimmy while driving on pavement on hard dirt roads. It's sort of like a bad tie rod end. The cast arm is quite expensive and removal is a pretty involved teardown. Wear on the arm is more when a FEL is used on the tractor as it takes a lot of lateral force to steer the wheels with a load in the loader.

On the subject of taxes, we purchase all of our tractors and implements as ag., so we don't pay tax on purchases. If you want to go that route or if you can for that matter, you'd need an agricultrial exemption certificate.

I can't tell you about the tax laws, but I will heartily agree with several others who responded that the 3830 is a lot more tractor than a 3710. You're getting a brand new tractor with warranty and moving up 4 model years. If you are financing, it is a no brainer to get the new model. Have fun and good luck.

I agree Bob. Loader, 3 pt hitch lift and hook up, seat, etc. are all upgrades over the L3710, a great tractor in its own right. The braceless design of the new loaders is an improvement in visibility over the older yet still very good 3710 loader. It actually braces under and to the back rather then to the front which inteferes with engine accessability. The new design is very clean. The big upgrade was adding the same loader that is on the L3830 to the smaller L3430 and 3130. All 3 are very tough to beat. The older L10 series however are still great tractors. As 3050 said, the front axle/steering is also a big improvement. The steering control is great.

One thing about it, if you buy the 3710 and the steering is sloppy, remove the cast link, send it to me and I'll put in a bronze insert for you. I own a machine shop and I'll do it a lot cheaper than a new link.

I forgot to throw this in and its kinda after the fact because you already bought the 3710 but--
The 5030 I have has the new style loader on it. It's an LA853. I believe it's the largest capacity loader Kubota offers on this series. I have a problem with it over the loader that comes on the 3710 and that is--
The 3710 had 4 pins to remove and very stable swing down legs for dismounting the loader. It usually took about 2 minutes to dismount and 3 to remount the loader.
The 5030/853 loader has 2 pins and is a LITTLE quicker in both aspects but the stabilizer legs are not adequate for the loader and the loader has to be absolutely level on dismount to get it aligned for a remount. This was not the case on the 3710. I don't have very much concrete available to remove the loader on and I found out the hard way the first time I dismounted the 853 in the dirt. I had to pin the loader on one side, lift it slightly and block the other side to level it before it would slide into the upright. I never had that problem with the 4 pin mount on the 3710. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Used L3710 or New L3830 - Use tax

Several years ago a friend who lives in Pennsylvania received a big bill from the Pennsylvania department of revenue for use tax and a penalty for late payment. The bill listed his purchases from 47th Street Photo in New York over several years. He checked and the states of Pennsylvania and New York were exchanging mail/phone order sales information. New York had obtained the sales records of all of the big New York mail order companies out of state sales (over some limit) and was providing them to the cooperating states who were doing the same for New York residents purchases.
