I tear my name and address off anything that goes for recylcing. Identity theft is supposedly wide spread if you believe the people that are trying to sell you protection.

I don't believe everything that anti-virus sellers try to tell me. Especially when most of them don't protect you from most events. Any kid with a smartphone can find out your name, address and phone number within minutes. People need more info than that to steal your identity. I can Google "username Industrial Toys" in forums and find out more about you than I could get off any magazine cover.

In years past the biggest threat from names and addresses on magazines was from malicious hackers that fairly easily could crack the databases used by the magazine subscription clearing houses...they could easily get credit card information from the databases...

I have more credit cards than a person should have because they all pay cash rebates. One may give 5% back on gas, another one 5% back on travel, another 5% back on groceries, etc.
Usually 2 of them have expiration dates each year. Whenever I buy a subscription of anything or order one of these free products that you have to call up and cancel after a certain time or they charge you for it, I use a card that is expiring very soon. That way I am assured that they will not continue sending me the product after I have to pay for it.

When I got a new Visa card that was good for 5 years, I returned it and asked for one that expired every 2 years and it was granted.

I sometimes list my old magazines in the Free section on Craig's List.
Never have a problem getting rid of Hemmings Muscle Machines, Astromony, Sky and Telescope, Air and Space or Discover issues.
A couple of nerds I know usually take the Scientific American ones.
If no one takes them in a few days, they go in the bin at the recycling center.

Getting off topic, but while I am talking about credit cards, there are big savings in using them right. For example: I have a card that gives me 5% rebate on gas. I use it at Flying J, Pilot, gas stations where I get another 5 cents off per gallon when I enter my phone number. Since I travel a lot I have the card registered with Southwest Airlines and I get a point for every dollar I spend with it. There are 2 other places I have the card registered with that give me 1 point for each dollar I spend using it. So I am saving about 30 cents a gallon on gas I buy.

I saved all of my old National Geographic and Playboy magazines (I read the articles) for many years. When I moved I sold them all on eBay for a nice price. I did not cut any addresses off as this would have destroyed the value.

Wise fellow at the Parker store advised me to buy a prepaid credit card enough to cover a purchase. Nobody stealing the card # could rob more than the remaining balance.

I asked Chase to lower my card's limit for my protection. They assured me that losses/steals would be covered by insurance and encouraged me to raise vs lower the limit.

Fine with me, as I pay it off monthly anyway. :laughing: I get 'cash back' and haven't paid a dime of interest in 14 yrs.

btw, my online reloading subs cost ~ same as mag subscriptions/year, but they keep the baggage and I can keep the access, easier by searching than by fumbling through stacks of mags whose articles I haven't catalogued. (got LoadData?)

btw, My treasures are Petersen's Sports Car Graphic from the '60s and the days of Group 7 racing.
