We have a 3 week trip to TX the end of June through July and will visit Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and back to Houston. We are looking for places to eat and places to see. Wife has gone through the AAA books and has a list of places to see. But what are the places we should not miss? On restaurants we love TexMex, barbeque, steak, and Italian food. We are looking for places the locals go to not the tourist traps.

We plan to be in Dallas for the 4th of July, where is the place for the best fireworks show in the Dallas area??

Thanks in advance for your help.:D

On your trip inbetween Dallas and Houston you'll encounter the town of Buffalo around mile marker 179 on I-45. Rancho Viego is some of the absolute best TexMex that you can get.

Where all are you visiting? We can probably help you out if we know.

Fly into Houston, rent a car and then go! :D So we are open to pretty much anything. Will be the wife and 16 old daughter. We are staying in hotels and just checking out the area in each place, not visiting friends, do not know anyone,:( just part of our annual trip to see the USA. This year it is TX.:p Here is the plan for how long we will stay in each town/city based on AAA review of things to see:

Houston: 5 days
San Antonio: 4 Days
Frederickburg: 1 Day
Austin: 3 days
Waco: 1 day
Dallas: 6 days
Houston: 1 day

Has anyone gone to a Texas Rangers baseball game? We plan to go to a game just wondering best place to sit, park, eat in the area, etc. They play the LA Angles during the time we are in town. Of all the cites we are visiting they are the only team that will be at home during this time.

Anyone know of any AA AAA baseball teams in any of these cities we wil be in?

If you are in Austin and like BBQ, you can't miss Salt Lick The Salt LickRemember they don't sell booze, but they allow you to bring your ice chests and enjoy the the entertainment while waiting. Make sure to go to the Original and not the one in town. An Experience you will remember!

I don't know any resturants that I'd recomend, but there are a few sites that I would recomend.

The Alamo is in San Antonio. It's a must see, and something that you can do in a few hours. It's not all that big, but interesting and great for pictures. Right across the street from the Alamo is where you will find the River Walk.

We spent a few hours there with the kids. They didn't care for it and were bored after an hour. I wouldn't make a special trip to see it, and doubt that we'll ever go back, but if you're in the area, it's worth checking out.

Sea World was the main reason we went to San Antonio, and was worth the drive. We stayed all day and was able to see everything and go on all the rides one time. There is an awesome roller coaster, plus the shows are just amazing!!

Just north of San Antonio is one of the very best wildlife drive-through parks you will ever find. It's called Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch After you pay to get in, you can drive around the ranch as many times as you want. We went four times and each time it was different. You can feed the animals from your window with food they give you and you can buy more to keep feeding them. Some will put their heads inside your car, others will just ignore you completely. The kids had an absolute blast there!!!!!

Right next door the the Wildlife Ranch is Natural Bridges Cavern Welcome To Natural Bridge Caverns Texas We went there next and took the tour through the cavern. We like caverns and enjoy seeing new ones. After the tour, we did some of the touristy things they had there for the kids. We bought several bags of "dirt" with "treasure" in them. The kids sifted through the bags and discovered the treasures in a sluce box type of setup. They loved it.

There was also a 40 foot tower with two zip lines on it and a climbing wall. Steph and our daughter went down the zip line, with both of them screaming all the way!! Our son wanted to climb the tower, so they straped him in and let him go. We had spent so much time doing other things that he was the last climber of the day. The instructor usualy stays on the ground and offers advice, but with Peyton, he climbed next to him and helped him through a few rough spots. With a little help, he made it all the way to the top and rang the bell!!! We were very proud of him.

The State Capital is in Austin and worth visiting. We were just going to stop in and show the kids the building. We thought you could only see the entrance area and that was it. But the building is wide open to explore, so we sat in on sessions of the House and Senate. We went to the Govenors office and our Representatives office. He was in session, but his secretary let us look around. Then we ate lunch in the cafeteria, which was pretty good.

Texas is a very big state. Be sure you plan enough time to get to all the areas you mentioned. Nothing is just an hour away. It's several hours to half day or days away.

I'd recommend that you take your Texas map and find Llano.

Plot a trip thru Llano such that you arrive there hungry... noonish or evening.

Spend an hour and a half at Cooper's Old Time BBQ there... absolutely and unquestionably the best BBQ in Texas.... (I know, everybody has differrent BBQ taste, but this is my opinion.)

They have BBQ:
Cabrito (goat)... almost no place else does
beef ribs
chicken
prime rib
sausage
pork chop (totally unbelievable!!)

Not cheap, but you DO get what you pay for. Their sides are also very, very top quality.

BBQ, Texas barbecue, brisket & ribs. Best BBQ - Order Online
check out their restaurant tour for an idea of the layout... their pits are huge.. and need to be... they serve a huge number of people daily.. they must be doing something right:eek:

While in Houston, be sure and catch the San Jacinto Monument where Texas won its independence from Mexico and the Battle Ship Texas adjacent to it. Also, the museum at Nasa.. great tours there.

Sounds like a good eatin' trip. My wife's parents live in Austin. I highly recommend the following restaurants:

Austin -- The Salt Lick for bbq (I second bbirder's vote)
Austin -- County Line for bbq
Austin -- Chuy's (pronounced "Chewy's") for Tex-Mex
Austin -- Z Tejas, for kind of upscale Tex-Mex, near downtown
Austin -- Manuel's -- Mexican, not Tex-Mex, kind of upscale, kind of loud, downtown

Gruene, Texas -- The Grist Mill, on a back road between Austin and San Antonio. At least one winery is on this route, too.

San Antonio -- Boudro's, a fancier place along the Riverwalk. There are tons of good restaurants along the Riverwalk.

Fredericksburg -- There are good German restaurants. And don't miss the Admiral Nimitz museum!

Houston -- Atchafalaya River Cafe -- On Westheimer Ave. Pronounced "cha-fa-LIE-yuh") Fantastic cajun food! Not sure if it's still open. The last time I visited was in the early 90s on business.

Have a great trip!

I knew my friends at TBN would help.:D Thanks, keep the ideas and suggestions coming.

We originally were only going to spend a day or two in each city and travel north as far as St Louis, Mo. But when we started to look at the AAA book, we saw a lot to see and do, so we decided to just spend the entire time in TX.
