A few miles outside of Austin is Lockhart, TX which has at least a couple famous BBQ places. The original and the one I would ride my motorcycle to many weekends was Kreuz Market. You'd walk back to the pit and order "fat" or "lean" by the pound from the guy at the pit, pick your poison of saltines or white bread and then could buy some sides at the "restaurant" where you'd eat your BBQ dry at long tables. They'd also have some sausage, if your lucky maybe some venison sausage. It's always seemed like the most pure form of BBQ and the best I've eaten. I think the place has moved from it's original location so I'm not sure the knives are still chained to the table as in the old place. In general, I really like Texas BBQ- focus on beef brisket, and beef ribs are so good.
Welcome to KreuzMarket.com!

In my opinion, you couldn't pick a much worse time to visit Texas; too hot that time of year. May and October are the best times.:D And my favorite town to visit in Texas is San Antonio. So I agree with everything Eddie Walker said, plus we found the La Margarita Restaurant to be very good. And you shouldn't miss the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum just a short walk (block or two) from the Alamo. The attached is just one of many pictures I made the last time we were there.

Kreuz Market had definately moved from its old location, still in Lockhart, but is nothing like it used to be. In fact, has been closed on several occasions when I've driven thru Lockhart. The time or two I tried it after it moved, the BBQ was, IMHO, nothing like it used to be. To me, the pit makes the BBQ. Different pit, different BBQ.

Yankees Fan,

You said your original itinerary included St. Louis, and you love Italian food. If you change your mind and decide to visit St. Louis anyway, you simply must visit "The Hill" neighborhood on the south side of city, just off Route 40. It's still a close-knit Italian neighborhood. Joe Garagiola and Yogi Berra grew up there.

I grew up in Illinois just 65 miles from St. Louis. (Was born in '64, a year the Cardinals beat your beloved Yankees in the Series!) We get back there often and love to eat at The Hill. There are outstanding authentic Italian restaurants just about every block.

Lots to see in St. Louis. The Arch of course is unique and beneath it is a first-class musuem of American westward expansion. Riverboats still cruise. A fine botannical garden and lots more.

Bird my wife & I were at the museum restaurant just 3 weeks ago, they have a huge upstairs full of animals (stuffed) of course. It was quite a sight to see.
And the food was good too. We were there for a Mahindra dealers convention
The river walk was very nice.

We are currently in Texas Hill Country. Northwest of San Antonio. We enjoyed the Alamo and River Walk. If you can arrive before noon it will allow great touring without the crowds. 8:00 am in the summer. Fredircksburg was a good place to tour especially the Nimitz South Pacific Museum.
We try to travel the back roads with our RV. Stay off the Interstates. TX has lots of great roads that will keep you off them. Lots of places to stay with a RV. But finding accommodation's in these area's may be difficult.
We also enjoy visiting some of the Texas TBN'ers.
Check out the South forum.

Is Billy Bobs still around? What about the place that cuts your tie off if you are wearing one? Aren't both of them around Dallas/Ft Worth?
