Is Billy Bobs still around? What about the place that cuts your tie off if you are wearing one? Aren't both of them around Dallas/Ft Worth?

Yep, Mike, Billy Bob's is still around. I've only been there once and that was probably the first year it existed, so it's been more than a few years. Our youngest daughter took company from Finland to Billy Bob's a couple of months ago, though, and they really enjoyed it.

And, yep, the Trail Dust Steak House still exists, too. I understand it's quite popular, but again, we've only eaten there once and I believe that was in 1976. I know the menu has changed by now, but back then I believe it was their 24 oz. T-bone that I had; tasted good, but was not too big at all since it was mostly bone and fat and we never went back.

So both places must be doing something right to have lasted all this time.:D

On your trip inbetween Dallas and Houston you'll encounter the town of Buffalo around mile marker 179 on I-45. Rancho Viego is some of the absolute best TexMex that you can get. quote]

Is this it?

Thats it! I didn't realize they had a website.

Right outside Fredricksburg you'll find Luckinbach. Its only a few miles out so make sure ya stop in. Everybodies got to go to LB once in there life just to say they went there. Tons of wineries in that area too.

The Alamo is gonna amaze you as to how small it really is. You think its gonna be huge by looking/reading about it but its not. Its one of the best places to visit.

Right outside of Huntsville (1 hour north of Houston) is the Texas Prison musuem. Its worth it to stop by there for 30-45 minutes for a break. You can learn a little about my life that way. Been working at the pen for 14 years, only 17 more to go. :(

Ron mentioned back roads. I would highly suggest following his advice. Lots of the places you'll visit have become nothing but tourist destinations. Fredricksburg is one of them. Its buetiful country but to me its just lots of shops otherwise. Coming from NY Texas is gonna be different automatic. If its possible to you should really see the small towns along the way. Thats what our life is really like. I welcome you to come and enjoy it with us. As your trip gets closer you may shoot me a PM and I'll give ya my phone number and we could meet up along the way somewhere. Everybody in Texas is a freind, even a dang Yankee.

I sent you a PM, but just let me post some of this in here too. There is a steak house restaurant called the Cow Camp Steakhouse, just about 35-40 minutes west of Ft Worth Texas, in Decatur, Texas, on the main highway, highway 287 north.

It's a log cabin building, with the same ambiance inside as a log cabin mountain lodge with a huge stone fireplace that takes up one whole wall. They play old country music from stars like Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, and Eddie Arnold, softly in the background.

The food critic from the Ft Worth Star Telegram, the big newspaper in Ft Worth, came in and ate, just as a regular customer, unknown to the owners. He then wrote an article the following weekend calling it the best steak between Ft Worth and Amarillo Texas.

Many Friday and Saturday nights, there is a 45 minute to one hour waiting time, if you don't have reservations, but if you decide to go there and want to get in, let me know because I know the owners REAL WELL!! My wife sleeps with one, and I sleep with the other!! LMBO!!

Have a great trip, as Texas is one fantastic state to visit, with a great deal to see!

I was going to suggest Cow Camp Steahouse. I can attest to the tenderloin that melts in your mouth. If you eat too much, you can always catch a nap in the Rest Area next to it.:D

If you are a non-smoker who is bothered by a small amount of smoke, pick a Tuesday or Wednesday night when the crowd is smaller. The only complaint I've ever heard about that restaurant is that it is too small for good separation between the smokers and non-smokers. In my opinion, the food is worth it no matter what.

...and I don't sleep with either owner.

When in the Dallas Area, plan on spending at least one day in Fort Worth. I would recommend the Stockyards, as they have some good western wear shops, some saloons, and Billy Bobs-a great place to hang out in the evening, depending upon your taste and who is playing-they get some pretty big names through there. Stockyards is part of the original Fort Worth when it was a cattle drive town (Chisholm Trail) and that part still has the old west look to it, with the original building facades. Riskey's is a good place for lunch. Lonesome Dove is a great restaurant in that area, but a bit more upscale. Fort Worth also has a really nice zoo. If you are into the art scene, go to the Kimball. They also have recently completed a Modern Museum of Art which is fantastic. If you like western art, The Amon G. Carter Museum has the best collection of Remington's (statues and paintings) ever assembled. These are all located in the Art's District in Fort Worth, and within walking distance of each other.

Do yourself a favor. If you cannot resist the temptation to buy yourself a cowboy hat, we only wear straw in the summer down here, and they don't look right with shorts and sandals and socks. Trust me on this.

Ranger's games are fun, but the team generally sucks. Go to a night game. Sitting in the stadium during a day game during the summer is unbearable. Trust me on this. Night games will still be hot, but usually a breeze picks up around sundown. Unlike Houston, we do not have a roof and air conditioning. Drink plenty of fluids. there are a bunch of chain type restaurants in the vicinity of the stadium, but nothing really walking distance. Yet. Go early and check out the new Cowboy Stadium, which is being built quite near the Ballpark at Arlington (or whatever they are calling it these days).

Dallas itself is not a huge tourist destination. Dallas Museum of Art is nice. The Sixth Floor Museum (Kennedy Assasination) is also worth a visit, but both of these are easily done in 1/2 day. There is an Aquarium here which gets good reviews. You may want to see who is playing at the House of Blues, as this has become one of the more active venues and has some band performing almost nightly.

Dallas has lot's of restaurants, but mostly chains. For a great steak, go to Bob's. Food is terrific and service is excellent. Dickeys has pretty good barbeque, and they have locations all over town. For Tex Mex, try Taqueria Arrandas or Cantina Laredo. Different styles, but both good in their own way. Some in Dallas rave about El Fenix, but IMHO it's just OK. Stephen Pyles has also opened up a new place on Ross Avenue downtown He's one of the big names of the Tex Mex craze 20 years ago. I have not been there yet, but it has gotten some very good reviews. Probably pretty pricey.

If you are an outdoorsman, there is a Cabela's and two Bass Pro located in the area as well. The Cabela's is new and very nice (it's my favorite of the two) Bass Pro has two locations, and both are located on lakes (Grapevine and Lake Ray Hubbard).

If your wife and daughter are shoppers, take them to the original Nieman Marcus store downtown. There is a restaraunt there, The Zodiac Room, which is a popular lunch destination for the "ladies that lunch" crowd. If you see my wife, tell her I said hey, and to put the credit card back in my wallet.:D

Forgot to answer about Fireworks.

Best show I've seen in the area is at Lonestar Park. It's the horse racing track. They will have races, followed by fireworks and a concert. Reserve a table upstairs in the Silks Dining room. It's air conditioned and has the best view, plus the table reservation is good for the entire night, so you can come early, watch the races, have dinner, a few drinks, stay for the fireworks and concert, and no one will run you out of there. Make your reservations early (Like March or April), as they will book fast. They typically do fireworks on July 3 and 4, so that gives you a better chance to get in.

Oh, and depending upon your itinerary, you may want to consider taking 287 from the Hill Country (Fredricksburg) to the Dallas area. First of all, it's a much prettier drive than I-35. Secondly, There has been a lot of construction along I-35 between Austin and Dallas that you may want to avoid. If you are planning to stop in Waco before Dallas, nevermind, (or you can cut over at some point) but if you are doing Waco after Dallas, that's what I would do.

Apparently, the Saltgrass Steak House chain is in a lot of cities. We've eaten at one on I-635 northwest of Dallas and I have a bottle of their "Seven 7 Steak Spice" seasoning that we sprinkle on steaks that we grill at home.

Sounds like a good eatin' trip. My wife's parents live in Austin. I highly recommend the following restaurants:

Austin -- The Salt Lick for bbq (I second bbirder's vote)
Austin -- County Line for bbq
Austin -- Chuy's (pronounced "Chewy's") for Tex-Mex
Austin -- Z Tejas, for kind of upscale Tex-Mex, near downtown
Austin -- Manuel's -- Mexican, not Tex-Mex, kind of upscale, kind of loud, downtown

Gruene, Texas -- The Grist Mill, on a back road between Austin and San Antonio. At least one winery is on this route, too.

San Antonio -- Boudro's, a fancier place along the Riverwalk. There are tons of good restaurants along the Riverwalk.

Fredericksburg -- There are good German restaurants. And don't miss the Admiral Nimitz museum!

Houston -- Atchafalaya River Cafe -- On Westheimer Ave. Pronounced "cha-fa-LIE-yuh") Fantastic cajun food! Not sure if it's still open. The last time I visited was in the early 90s on business.

Have a great trip!
