Vacuum cleaners - Oreck?

Well, I found the price tag on the Oreck I bought used. $9.99 plus tax. Haven't seen any deals like it since. When I saw the new list prices on the Consumer Reports pdf, I thought these machines better vacuum by themselves and wash the dishes, too.

My Oreck XL works fine, it is 6 years old, I don't have alot to vacuum, it has a 21 year warranty as long as you take it in every year for the annual inspection which they put a new bag and new belt and fix whatever maybe broke.

I haven't had to pay for a belt or a bag in six years.

I want to add that we love our Dyson vacuum as far as a lot of power and doing a great job - But the construction has plastic pieces on it that break - And they won't sell you the little part you need, they want you to buy a whole cannister - Right now, I need $100 worth of parts for it - It still works great, but I'm not spending the $100 to fix the parts that would make it perform like new. I checked Ebay etc, Same deal, expensive parts.

I agree on the plastic parts, but mine was covered under warranty, didn't pay a dime. Called and told them that the part snapped while I was using it, they told me who the local service store was, and it was taken care of. We have been happy with the cleaning ability of it. I like that there is no bad to replace.

We use a Bissell Bagless. 12 amp the same as Mattman's. I don't remember the cost but don't think it was too much. It does a decent job.

We have a Dyson DC14 and like it. It is about the best vacuum we have had for indoor house use. I particularly enjoy looking at the vacuumed up debris in the clear canister. I like clear canisters. Kinda like looking at money in a glass piggy bank. I think that feeds into some hidden obsessive disorder, and it's a good advertising point from Dyson...

I like clear canisters.

I like the idea of a bagless vacuum and one in which you can see when it needs emptying, but I've read that some have a filter that's more trouble to keep clean and/or replaced than the bags. I think I want a bagless when we have to buy another vacuum, but since our old Wind Tunnel by Hoover is only a little over 11 years old, I hope it isn't too soon.

My wife and I just bought a Hoover Mach5 a couple of weeks ago. We've been very impressed with how it cleans. It has a cord rewinder and never needs filters/bags.

Bird brings up an important point about filters. We had one of those "bagless" vacuums for a while. I forget the brand. At first, I liked seeing the dirt in the container. But then it seemed like we traded buying cheap bags for our other vaccuum for buying filters, and the prices on the filters weren't appealing.

So we went backwards. I got rid of the bagless vacuum at a yard sale and bought an old Kirby at a thift store for about $20. I think I put a new fan in it for about $10. Then I bought a bunch of bags.

The technology behind the old used Kirby vaccuum we now have may be ancient technology, but it's simple and it's powerful. There's a bag and the dirt goes in it. No filters.

We have the Oreck that I picked up used for $9.99 plus sales tax also at a thrift store just to see what it did. If we need light cleaning, it does the job. If we need to suck the carpet off the floor, out comes the Kirby. If either one breaks, we didn't pay much to start with. Save that money for something important for the tractor!
