We love our 1 year old 5055E and have decided to get rid of the 2040 with 145 loader.

However, the pricing seems to be all over the board when I do some searching.

2040 without loader 10K
2040 with loader 8K
2040 with loader 11K
2040 with loader 9.95K

etc... Mostly through dealers.

Now that we have decided to get rid of it I want to get it out of the barn before the winter and I don't want to have it listed forever. It seems that if we offer it for a fair price it should go quickly.

What are these things going for in the real world?

Lot's of variables there to consider... What year - how many hours? What kinds of repairs or maintainance have been done? Have records and/or receipts? Type of transmission?

Loader have control station or operate from rear SCV's? Filled tires - rims rusty? Body straight - paint OK? Lights and gauges work? How much life in the tires? Pins worn out on the loader - cylinders leaky?

Depending upon the answers to these questions and a test drive to check PTO and clutch and 3pt and steering - you'll have a good idea of where your tractor would fit into the price range of the tractors you listed. Near the bottom, in the middle or at the top end!

Good luck.

Well, I think it is going to be bad news for ya.

Grandma just sold two tractors at her estate auction. Tractors WERE advertised.

The JD2040 had 7000hrs, and was a little rough around the edges, but ran great and everything worked like it should. (we actually used it for several years). It had the 145 loader as well.

It brought a measly $2400

And the ford 860 that ran good with 3400hrs, only brought in $1500.

Dissappointed to say the least.

Here is the best pic I have of the 2040, to give you an Idea of the condition.

If all I could get was $2400 for that tractor it would have been a "NO SALE".
Simply put not the day to sell the tractor.

WOW!

That seems ridiculously cheep. The loader itself should be worth that at least. I might have put a reserve on the tractors but I am sure you just needed to be rid of them.

I am not sure that $2400 at an estate auction is a good benchmark, I know that I never have looked for tractors at estate auctions. Perhaps I should, but most everything I have bought at an estate auction has been an impulse buy. Most, not all things sold at estate auctions go for less than they are worth. I have seen cars go for 1/2 their actual value.

That is the problem with auctions, people buy things, particularly expensive things, when they are ready to buy... And if they don't have a pressing need things can go very cheaply at auction.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them on a dealers lot somewhere.
I think that you would have gotten more for them at the London equipment auction.

IF the market is soft though mine will go into the back of the barn again until spring.

I know it is probabally not a real accurate benchmark, but it is a real world example and the only one I got that is relavant.

Price wasnt a consideration. Needed it gone. EVERYTHING was getting sold as she was moving in town into an addition build onto my aunts house to be better taken car. Yea, we were a little bummed, but thats the way auctions go. Some of the stuff brought more than expected as well.

Whoa... that's a real "kick in the pants"! Tractor looks to be pretty straight - albeit - some minor "sun damage". :D

For that kinda money - I could drive all the way to Ohio and back - and still have less invested in the 2040 than most of the tractor's listed on tractorhouse and machinefinder!!

Now THAT would be a drive:D

Kinda a long story how she aquired the tractor and I will not get into that,
but...

She tried selling it for a long time about 5 or 6 years ago for $4k. No luck at all. That is how we aquired it. We were "storing" it for her, but it was still hers. We used it, maintained it, and kept it going vs just sitting for the last 6 years. She had a lot of things like this. My grandparents were farmers and they had a lot of stuff that ended up with the "kids" but were still tehcnically "hers". But come estate sale/liquidation time, the only right thing to do was put all of that stuff or sale at the auction.

There were several people who came prior to look at it. The auctioneer was even expecting it to bring in the 4k range. But I guess the 7k hours didnt do it any favors either.

And yours is without loader.. Right? $4500 is a good deal even without a loader.

The other was $2400 with loader! :confused2:

That's a STEAL!!

Likely cost me about $3,500 (roughly) to drive roundtrip to OH from Alaska. That's figuring 8,500 miles @ 16 miles per gallon and averaging $4.50/gallon.

I could be there in a week. Probably take 8 days to get back home with a load.

Not exactly a "barnburner" deal at $5,900 - but, wouldn't be too shabby either!!

The buyer bought drinks for the house after he got home!! :D

Well, if you need a 2040 that bad...
And if you bring some jerry cans, diesel around here is 3.85 right now.

But, it seems that at $8000 it should be a fairly good deal and $7000 should be a very good deal for a working, newer type, 2040 with a sun tan  and a loader.

We really would have loved to have you at the auction back in June:D

Not really...!! :p But, I've make so many trips during the past 10 years - buying and hauling equipment to Alaska - that's my benchmark. How much time and money is it gonna cost me to go get it!

And I try to "overestimate" the cost - 'cause a ruined tire or a blown belt - will always put a dent in your wallet; if you're not ready for it!
