Not in ALL cases.

Plus what idiot has not heard how addictive these meds are?
I was prescribed them 15 years ago, and took them for one day, and decided they were not for me, and have not let a doc prescribe them for me since.

People who has a brain needs to know how to use it!

Of course not in all cases. Nobody ever claimed that. The idiots as you call them were told by the pharma companies and their doctors that the meds weren't addictive. Again, that is the point of the lawsuit.

I was told there was Santa Claus when I was a kid, I grew up!
I have never heard a single professional say drugs were not addictive, and anyone with half a brain knew they were no matter what someone who had a vested interest in selling them said!

Im sick of idiots who make bad decisions and then try to make money off of those decisions

DMx82, I haven't kept up with the case or the facts so I'm not disputing your assertions. Big companies who lose large lawsuits often utilize bankruptcy to reorganize. That doesn't mean they escape complete liability. Just look at the pennzoil v texaco lawsuit.

No matter how egregious the plaintiff's lawyers made it seem to the jury that the 'big pharma' lied, cheated and down right injected the drugs into the veins of the plaintiffs I learned long ago and the hard way that there is always another side to every case.

Most medical research in this country produces worthwhile results and products and treatments that save lives of millions. I don't want that to be endangered. But that doesn't mean I want any companies taking advantage either. Ive been on both sides in lawsuits. Insurance companies rip off millions of people everyday but they are still the backbone of the lending industry in this country and without them nobody could afford to finance a house, store or factory.

Luckily or providentially I have been fortunate to have never been involved with using any drugs and have never even had to take but the smallest amount of Rx drugs. For someone my age that is pretty remarkable. Almost everyone I know is taking something for some reason.

Ive seen people squander substantial family fortunes due to legally Rx drugs, alcohol and illicit substances. I don't think I or you or anyone else should have tho bear the cost of their idiocy.

TBS, like you I have managed to avoid prescription medications, and am very grateful for that. What amazes me is how people want to lump the folks you mentioned in your last paragraph in with the folks who simply followed doctor's orders and got addicted. I also love how people cite the need for "personal responsibility" yet have no interest in holding companies responsible. I agree that the pharma industry does a lot of good, and of course they are amply rewarded for doing good. I just think they should be held accountable when they knowingly lie about their products, leading to (insert big number) deaths.

I personally don’t see much merit in the opioid lawsuits. IMO, the addicts fall into two categories. One group has the mental addictive obsession, and they would (and probably did) abuse any drugs available. Opioids just became their drug of choice. The other group doesn’t have the addictive personality, but they innocently became physically addicted to the pills.

For the latter group, the solution is straightforward. They can go through treatment and get through the physical withdrawal period, then their problem is solved. I strongly suspect that this group is a tiny percentage of the problem.

For those with the mental obsession, treatment is just the tip of the iceberg. They will get clean time and time again, then go right back out and start using again. It defies all logic. Each individual needs something in their life to finally trigger a complete psychic change. IMO, the problem cannot be solved by throwing money at it.

They may have originally received pills from a doctor, but they quite likely exaggerated their pain, and they used to be able to play multiple doctors for prescriptions. Blaming the pills is yet another step in the addict’s lifetime of blaming everything else in the world for their problems and their actions.

Addiction and depression go hand in hand. EVERY addict eventually wants to stop! But their mind is having a difficult time getting back to normal. They all need help. None of them need or deserve belittling from uncaring, opinionated people.

Giving them compassion and respect may be just what they need to see the light and break the addiction.
