Varmit Rifle

I need a new 22. After 30 years my 10/22 is just about DOA. lol. I am thinking about a lever gun in 22 WMR or the new 17.

I have the .17 in a bolt action Marlin, mo. 17V, with a bull barrel. I topped it off with a Bushnell Legend scope 3-9x50. If you go with a 50mm scope you must use high mounts or the bell will hit the barrel.
I really like this round, it is good to about 150 yards and accurate. Never thought I would see this type of performance with a rim fire.
I read that Hornady is now coming out with a .20 caliber round and they predict it will be the next hot selling ammo/gun.

I expect Ruger to offer a 17 Hornady in their 1022 rifle soon, if not their missing a great opportunity. I have their bolt in a the 22 Hornet which is a fine shooter. J

Whats the ammo choice like on the .17 ? are they all ballistic tips or can you get solids ? Is the .20 supposed to be a rim fire ? I havent heard any scuttle on that one. I have always wanted a 22 WMR but the .17 looks pretty slick. I need to get after some coyotees.

So far all I can get is the polymer-tipped rounds but they are an excellent round. As far as the new .20, it appeared to be center fire. I saw a mall blurb about it and they had a photo of one of the cartridges. For the life of me I cannot find the article or remember which sporting magazine I saw it in. I'll post it when I come across it again.

I've messed around for years with firearms, specifically rifles,
both hunting and target shooting. I'd say the best firearm and cartridge for your application would be a Springfield Armory M1A chambered in .308W. 20 round mags are still available, but pricy. The round will do all that your are looking for. I shoot one in "across the course" and long range matches. "Across the course" is from 200, 300 and 600 yds. Long range is usually 600 and 1000 yds. (Both with iron sights.) It's very accurate, ammo is plentiful, has quick follow up, and can sometimes be bought with a special deal that includes scope and mount. The downside is that it is a little heavy for an all day carry rifle. And will at the best, be at the upper end of your budget. If you get the chance, pick one up and compare the construction of this rifle with any other commercially available firearm. The M1A is a semi-auto version of the M14 that our troops were issued during the Korean War and in the early years of Viet-Nam. They were built to take abuse and last for a looong time! Of all my firearms, if it were SHTF time, that would be the one I take with me. Nosler Ballistic tips at about 150grns work extremely well out of the box magazine. Soft point bullet tips may deform a bit during recoil while contained in the mag, but will not have a serious effect on accuracy. The .17HMRF is exactly what it says--.17 cal Hornady Magnum Rim Fire.
For now all I have seen are the ballistic tip rounds which are PERFECT for it's intended purpose but I do wish they would introduce a solid. YES, it is a rim fire. You cannot reload it. If you wish to reload get the .22 Hornet and load using the Hornady 33 grain ballistic tip and Hodgkins Small Gun Powder for about 3000 FPS or better. It has more range and velocity than the .17 HMRF and is a more useful multi purpose round. The .17 is around 2500/2700 FPS I think. I have taken everything from ground hogs and skunks to Peccaries and such as that with my Hornet. Several rifles are currently chambered for the Hornet including the Ruger bolt action. It is a superb small rifle with the varmint barrel with excellent accuracy at 100/150 yards.
I think the alleged .20 is intended to be a centerfire but I cannot remember either where I read anything about it. J

Oh, the 17HMRF is a necked down .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum. At least it darn sure looks like it to me thus reducing tooling and development costs for the new round. The 20 cal would have to be something entirely new unless they stick with the .22WMRF case with a .20 cal projectile and it would then still be a rimfire. Who knows? J

Is yours a armory rebuild ? Which armory ?? Did you see the recent article about theese in the American Rifleman ? Very interesting stuff. I did realize the .17 HMR was a rim fire. I was really inquireing about the 20 cal. I have long had a fascination with the little cartridges. I love the 218 Bee. And the 22 Hornet was so popular that I really think its time they bring back a little center fire. I have had a few 25-20's but they are really anemic, my favorite is the 32-20 in a Winchester Model '92 SRC. I see that Winchester has a model 9417 available. I need to get a new plinker for sure and soon. I also really like that 9410 for a little grouse gun. My beretta is way too nice to bust brush with. Would really like to hear about that 20 cal if you find the article.

I really dislike reloadin' for the Hornet. By the time I get them little cases trimmed they cut my fingers, and I keep crushin' the shoulder on the cases. If I'd had military cases it might have been different, but the commercial ones suck.
