A 4 in cyl, 2 in shaft, and 1000 psi will only produce a force of 4 ton.

A 5 in cyl, 2 n shaft, and 1000 psi, will produce a force of about 10 ton.

A 6 in cyl will produce a force of 14 ton.

I sure like the idea of a two stage pump, J_J. Are you talking Prince parts? Would stuff from Northern work?

The prices are more within my retirement budget from Post #16, J_J. Where can I dig them up? I checked out the stuff from my Northern master catalog and can work with some of that stuff. But to feel more comfy about what I'm doing I'd like to understand more of the terminology describing the valves. There's stuff like open center, power beyond, spool, 3 way, 4 way....is there a glossary of terms some place I can learn?

There is a lot of hydraulic data out there. Here is a hyd glossary. You can look on Ebay for hyd training CD. The Army/Navy hydraulics CD is a good one.

Hydraulic Glossary

The prices/items an be found below at Surpluscenter.com

Go to hydraulics, then select tech help on left side.

In your search window, just type in what you are looking for, and you can sift through all the material out there. There are hyd CD, books, and the Internet, and of course TBN.

I got upset Tuesday with that log splitter. It no longer exists in it's old form! There are now several piles: copper tubing and fittings, scarp metal and angle iron, hydraulic components deemed sorta useless (for now), and hydraulic components to be used for new splitter.
So far the cylinder is the only piece that made it to that last pile. Not sure if it can be salvaged. Will study on that a bit soon. Also will post it's picture. It's an interesting piece.
Thanks for the listings on terminology, J_J. Will check them out.
