I thought I read the VW has put a halt on all sales of new and used diesels until this is settled out.

Read an article about this. VW is reaching out to current owners and offering "loyalty cash" to trade in and purchase new vehicles. Perhaps it's working. According to what I read, dealership traffic and sales are reportedly picking up. Can't find the link now, but I'll keep looking.

Not much in this article that isn't obvious but it emphasizes that dealers are taking a huge hit:

They've paid VW, with borrowed money, for cars they can't sell.

Dealers said they have no guidance from VW.

Not quite. Yes, used of course but with an extended factory warranty. However they typically up charge more than it would cost to buy an equivalent warranty independently.

Yes... only have bought one certified pre-owned and this was after Mom's car was stolen and I found a replacement for her...

It was a 2011 and came with a one year warranty similar to if she had bought new including loaner vehicle...

Volkswagen's troubles in the US could be deepening after Bloomberg News reported that the company's death and injury claims were substantially lower than any other automaker.

Bloomberg's Jeff Green and Jeff Plungis cite a study of government data by financial advisory firm Stout Risius Ross Inc., which shows that the largest automaker's reported death and injury claims at a rate that was 9 times higher than Volkswagen did. In other words, VW's numbers are suspiciously low.

This has nothing to do with the emissions scandal that's currently engulfing VW. (About 11 million cars worldwide, mostly in Europe, are affected and with poisonous emissions as high as 40 times over the U.S. limit.)

Other carmakers have been caught under reporting death and injury claims. Honda was fined $70 million by US regulators earlier this year for the same reason.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this relates across all models, regardless of engine type.
