VW Clean diesels.... how did they get them so clean?

And now another unrelated problem brewing.

Volkswagen's troubles in the US could be deepening - Yahoo Finance

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this relates across all models, regardless of engine type.

I'm confused and kinda surprised that manufacturers even report that data. The Feds have that accident data from all the police reports if I understand correctly how the NHTSA works. If there was a ten fold discrepancy between auto makers I'd think that would have come out.

The discrepency is between data reported by the manufacturer and data actually captured. I can understand some discrepency. But a factor of 9 is perplexing.

Sometimes this sort of thing is innocent and the result of different definitions or databases. I find it very hard to imagine that VW would intentionally underreport something that they knew the Feds already had. I also don't know how manufacturers even get accident data. I never reported to Mazda that some jerk totalled my car this summer. If manufacturers do have such data they must be relying on the same police reports as NHTSA so why would they even bother reporting independently?? Still confused. I reread the Bloomberg report which is next to useless for detail.

The number was for death and injury claims. I understand that to mean how many times people filed a claim against the company. Many of these types of claims result in a payout and an NDA signed, so no one other than VW (and their lawyers) would know that number until an audit was done.

From the Bloomberg article. The keyword is claims, not accidents. The Bloomberg article also mentions this reporting by car makers is the result of the Firestone tire problems 15 years ago. The feds thought the manufacturers had this claim data, but were not required to report it.

The reporting of death and injury claims is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s so-called early-warning system to spot vehicle-defect trends in an attempt to reduce fatalities.

Not quite. Yes, used of course but with an extended factory warranty. However they typically up charge more than it would cost to buy an equivalent warranty independently.

Agreed; hardly any discernible difference, except a way to sell more used vehicles under the cloak of an overpriced ext. 'warranty'. Like I said, another marketing 'genius' ploy.:confused3:

All in all, either diesels will be almost non existent here in USA, or they'll be cost prohibitive. Thanks EPA.

I'm fine with catalytic exhausts and for better refining for cleaner burning fuels, but they need to adapt their rules based on available technologies rather than pie in the sky wishes. Most manufacturers will be forced to go back to gas. In which the EPA/gov needs to stop paying incentives to add ethanol to fuels. NOW!

If VW would put a camshaft driven by a gear drive instead of a belt, they could make that engine go 200K plus without cracking a gasket. It might not make a difference at this point.

Another four car makers fail diesel emissions tests: Guardian - MarketWatch

Another four car makers have joined the list of those whose diesel cars emit more pollution on the road than in regulatory tests, the issue that has created a massive scandal and major recall for Germany's Volkswagen AG VLKAY, +11.06% VOW3, +2.62% the Guardian reported Friday. Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi vehicles were all found to perform differently on the road than in test conditions, the Guardian said, citing data from Emissions Analytics, who tested the cars. The paper quoted Nick Molden from Emissions Analystics as saying the the issue is systemic across the industry. The report comes after the paper last week reported the same issue was found with cars made by Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo and Jeep.

No sign of BMW or Chevrolet Cruz on the list. (YET?)

'YET' is the operative word. Diesel engines are being regulated, not legislated, out of existence.

The Cruze TD sold in the US is made in Germany by VM Motori. VMM also makes the 3L TD used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
