VW Clean diesels.... how did they get them so clean?

1) VW allegedly committed fraud.

2) IC engines perform differently on the road, than they do in controlled lab conditions.

Anyone who has formally studied science should understand the distinction.

I suspect this point is going to be lost in the mass-market witch hunt that appears to be brewing.

If you were going to write a script How to Set Light-Diesels back 20 Years in the US market, you could do worse.

The Cruze TD sold in the US is made in Germany by VM Motori. VMM also makes the 3L TD used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Those V6 diesels are showing up in Dodge trucks, Jeep Cherokees and several different vehicles. So far as I can find they produce the highest MPG of any pickup trucks on the market. They do not have as much HP or torque as I would want in a pickup that I use for towing now and then. I'd like to see them offer a 4 liter version.

More hints on how to pass the EPA tests: detect the type of fuel used and the type of oxygenate additives. Knowledgeable readers are aware that US EPA tests don't use typical consumer road fuels for gasoline and Diesel equipped engines because of the high variability in content that greatly affects emissions output. For example, EPA doesn't use gasoline. It uses the "indolene clear" blend in all certification tests.

Note the max throttle fraction reported in the tests. Anybody out there limit yourself to 25% throttle ??

And maximum speed is 60mph and highway average is 48. That's how brick shaped pickups and vans get EPA highway ratings of 18 or 20.

My F150 3.5L Ecoboost gets its best mpg at 60mph.

My north star Caddy's green speed was 95mph.

My F-150 3.5L ecoboost is 3 mos. old and gets the best mileage at some speed which I have not done adequate testing to document. I do not know if some testing agency has published such figures. I do know that energy losses due to air resistance increase with the square of velocity regardless of other factors. I'm skeptical that my F-150 gets as good an MPG at 60 mph as it does at 55mph. I assume you were not saying the northstar caddy got it's best MPG at 95 mph (since I have no idea what 'green speed' is...)

The aero drag and friction forces are usually about equal at 55.

We have a Transit with Ecoboost and 3.31 that only turns around 2,000 rpms at highway speed. The most efficient speed for an engine is usually at the torque peak, which in the Transit is 2,250. So even though you are increasing the aero drag, speeding up to the torque peak might yield better numbers.

I can believe the F150 result but the Caddy claim is either bad math or pure BS.

Several posts in this thread are proof of this statement.
