I was on Catalina island twice. Once in 1979 on high school spring break and again around 1990's (can't remember exactly) for work. Kinda neat place. The ferry ride over was the first time I ever saw dolphins, and there were some bright orange fish in the harbor at Avalon. Only orange fish you see in Indiana are goldfish that people let go in lakes.

1650 mile road trip this weekend 8n my Jetta. Mississippi to Michigan and back. 50.6 mpg up and 46.5 back! That's hard to beat at interstate speeds.

No question about that at all. I still think hybrids rule in urban/suburban environments but the interstate belongs to small diesels.

If I didn't travel as much, I would like a Volt. My drive to work is a 90 mile round trip.

A newspaper said VW may be negotiating to build electric cars as mitigation. ... But I would wait for more news to confirm this. US asks VW for electric cars
Interesting. VW already makes an electric Golf. Too expensive but a very nice car with usable range for urban and suburban driving. If VW negotiated to drop the price by 10K I think they'd sell. That would po Chevy, Tesla, Nissan and Ford though.

Wife and I took a walk today and passed a rental car property. In the back of the lot were two VW Passat's parked against the fence with "RECALL" hand written in grease pencil on the driver's side window.

Looks like the settlement to owners will be buyback at (pre-scandal) depreciated value plus $5,000.

Stockholders are sueing VW over the loss of stock value. Fraudulent public statements by VW may lead to stock manipulation charges.

And VW's managers continue to get most of their annual bonuses.

The NYT article linked from there says retrofit fixes aren't available now, may be in the future.

This is the same BS they have been spouting since last September.

What will be critical for many of us is how the state/feds handle it for those of us who choose to keep our cars versus selling them back. I can register and "garage" my car in two states, Northern Virginia - very strict emissions inspection, or northeast Mississippi no emissions inspection.

The regulators may decide I can keep my car in both places, either, or neither.

I don't know how much my TDI pollutes but I'm PD sure it's less than my Ford 7.3 diesels.

Personally I'd like to scoop up another VW TDI Sportwagen at fire-sale prices.

I use to get about 50 mpg, but I put bigger tires on and that's dropped by about 5%, but on the other hand distances between sites has also dropped by about 5%.
