My son just purchased a old 1970's Massey Ferguson 135 diesel. It has a problem with the pto clutch. It will not release on the second stage of the clutch. You cannot engage the pto without grinding. We have adjusted the 3 adjustment nuts on the clutch through the inspection opening to about .060. The clutch peddle seems to have about the right free play, but still does not disengage the pto. What else can we do, split the tractor? Any ideas?

It may be that the tractor sat too long and the pto clutch disk is frozen to the driven one - if you have a tiller that will fit it, you could try hooking that up, starting the tractor (you would FIRST need to make sure the tiller is NOT contacting the ground - a bit tricky, but doable with jacks, etc)

Keep everyone well away, start the tractor, lift the (spinning) tiller with the 3point, make sure the control lever for the PTO is in neutral, find a patch that won't be hurt by tilling, drop the tiller, pump the clutch in and out, see if the tiller stops turning.

Other, NON ground engaging implements (like mowers) won't work for this, not enough resistance.

Not saying this will ALWAYS work, but a lot of the time those disks just need a bit of "polish" to break loose and start working again.

If it DOES work, it's much easier than the alternatives... Steve
