 Ha! Try steak and lobster.

The case that you're referring to was a person who was buying steak and lobster in order to resell it in order to convert the food stamps to cash. This is illegal, and the person who did it was arrested and convicted. Congratulations--the system is working.

Do you remember when it wasn't cool to get government assistance? Those days are long gone.

Do you remember when the unemployment rate was below 4% in the United States? Those days are long gone too. A lot of my friends have run out their unemployment, not because they are lazy, but because they lost their job due to lay-offs and couldn't find a replacement. It's especially cruel to be down on people who get government assistance when even working full time at a minimum wage job barely puts you above the poverty line.

I hate Walmart and avoid it as much as possible. Seems every day I go must be WIC day. You can't take a cart down any aisle, they are all clogged. I don't go in there to save money, I frankly don't see much savings there. But I can get quart of oil, a kite, and a loaf of bread all in one place so thats the only reason we go in there. But...it usually costs about $300-$400 before we get out of there.

You must have never shopped or went anywhere else to buy things before!!! With the exception of ALdi there is no where else that will beat walmart all the time on prices of things. Take for example a jar of relish, at my local nation wide chain grocery its about $2.50 for the tiny jar, walmart its about $1.60is and at Aldi it is closer to $1.50. This is just one item that i cherry picked. Another store brand white bread, i think at my grocery its $1.20-50ish? Walmart is $0.80-.90? and at Aldi its i think $0.70ish. If we bought all our groceries and things at the grocery store i have no doubt that we would spend another $50/month on the same stuff!!

It makes my blood boil when i see the "food stamp" folks at the store with all the expensive produce and meats paying with the "card" and i am paying for mine (well with a credit card that i pay off each month so its like cash) with cash. Then said woman is in parking lot rounding kids into her Escalade with the Crome package!!! I mean im getting into my $700 pickup truck and this lady is driving a $35-40k escalade (i assumed it was used but was only a few years old. i hope she could not buy it new and be on assistance). The system is broken and because of abuse it costs too much. I totally agree there should be supplemental assistance so kids and mothers dont have to suffer or go hungry just cause their parents cant afford better or enough food for them, but when someone has iphones and escalades and my hard earned tax dollars are buying thier stuff too, there is something wrong.

They talk all the time on the radio about folks buying formula at the high prices under the WIC program then selling it for the cash.

Any time small percentage of people can get something for free, they will lie, cheat and steal to do it.. I believe there are more people on the help list that needs it than the cheaters, liars and thieve.. I have never had to except anything from anyone in my life of course my life not over yet.. ,,
I gave back twenty dollars my wife’s uncle gave us when we got married,, 48 years ago, I thought it was charity.. Who ever heard of giving money at wedding,, live and learn.. on the plus side I got a garden.. Lou

The unemployment rate was higher when I entered the workforce in 1983 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics Data

Now we can argue whether that data is accurate all day long but my earlier point was, there is no stigma to receiving government assistance like there once was, even when unemployment was higher than it is today. I've even known people to brag about the government money they get while working for cash.

I don't think I'm being cruel by pointing that out.

I'll wait for others to tell you how you being cheap is what's wrong with our country...but most here are the same (including myself), we want the lowest prices, and then we (including myself) complain about the consequences.

I'd love to hear how we fix it. Can we all agree we will pay more (a LOT more) for everything? Nah...
I don't think that it was the OP's intent to criticize people that shop at Walmart because of the Cheaper prices. His intent was to relate the high percentage of People in this Country utilizing the WIC programs. I have seen people in front of me at the grocery store purchasing several Hundreds of dollars of groceries with a cart of high price items including steaks; etc and then getting items free that are covered by the WIC coupons. I have followed them to their vehicles in the parking lot and I've seen these same people driving brand new $50,000.00 plus Pickup trucks. There are a lot of people needing this assistance - WIC - but most certainly not the ones that are adorned with GOLD bracelets, necklaces, rings and a $40.00 manicure with designs on their fingernails. This is the PROBLEM. Thanks for listening. Just the FACTS.

The control of charity needs to be returned to local communities, itis a program that does need to be micro-managed. And every able bodied person that receives a check must be held accountable and required to work, whether that is cleaning the courthouse, mowing lawns, or picking up trash one must be required to work, assuming they are able.
