I should have been a bit more specific. I see folks buying a ton of crap on their EBT cards and then buy beer also. Maybe if forced to choose between beer and food with their cash............. They also have the ability to get CASH out of ATM's and I have seen people go right from the ATM to the register and buy cigarettes and beer.

"Dozens" out of "200 million"? It makes a good headline and sells papers, but as Lou66 said, someone will always cheat. Those that do should be punished for sure, but the scope of the cheating needs to be understood.

"A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals at ATMs inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video **** shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx"

I hate getting behind a woman with a cart full... after checkout, pulls a handfull of coupons... then at the end digs into her purse for funds. Lady, you just stood in line for three minutes duing nothing. Get your payment in order.

The bleeding heart liberals would never hear of it but IMO...anyone receiving government assistance should be listed monthly in newspapers etc...and one of the requirements to receive said assistance should be written quarterly reports from the beneficiaries of said assistance detailing what measures they have taken over the past quarter to (help) relieve themselves from needing said assistance...

The Germans call it "bread in a bottle." We're not talking Bud Light here either. :licking:

I would wager that the same newspapers that thought it their civic duty to publish the name of registered gun owners would balk at publishing the name of public benefit recipients.

Okay. You can pay the taxes to hire the report checkers. Seriously, there isn't enough stigma attached to some of these things. But there are many elderly people who are never going to work and cannot survive without assistance.

Every year the local delinquent property tax payers are listed in the town budget booklet. They have to pay their taxes plus interest, or eventually the town will foreclose for back taxes. The same people are listed year after year, often for multiple years. Our town is fairly lenient but they will eventually take action. Other towns go after property for 1 or 2 years unpaid taxes.

The case that you're referring to was a person who was buying steak and lobster in order to resell it in order to convert the food stamps to cash. This is illegal, and the person who did it was arrested and convicted. Congratulations--the system is working.

Do you remember when the unemployment rate was below 4% in the United States? Those days are long gone too. A lot of my friends have run out their unemployment, not because they are lazy, but because they lost their job due to lay-offs and couldn't find a replacement. It's especially cruel to be down on people who get government assistance when even working full time at a minimum wage job barely puts you above the poverty line.

Then there is the fact that, to equate to what minimum wage was in 1968, a worker would have to be paid in excess of ten dollars an hour today. American worker production per hour worked has improved for over 30 years, yet overall wages have been flat...
The US standard of living (for the average American family) is no longer on an upward trend, for the first time in over 60 years it has headed downward, meaning Most young Americans, as they grow into adulthood can expect to live with a lower quality of life, than their parents experienced...

In abstract...I think US taxpayers should have a means of learning exactly what percentage of federal income taxes they pay goes to support those that pay no (federal income) taxes...
