Want a "natural" barrier between me & neighbor

The privet varieties I am familiar with (Chinese and Japanese) are invasive and can create a nightmare down the road. They produce berries that birds spread. The escaped privet then overtakes the understory of wooded areas, crowding out native plants.

I guess slightly invasive is a good description, if they leave the ten foot barrier, i just mow them down..had it over ten years.. They did stop a huge hole down on the back side of the house.. planted sprigs every 2 feet in the wash.... it is controllable with roundup...But you sure have privacy on your side...

I have a bunch of white pines around the house, and YES, they are messy and break easy, clog the gutters, AND make TERRIBLE firewood. BUT, they are a great barrier.

I guess he didnt say how close to the house this barrier was going to be.

New house will be ~400 ft from the desired barrier area.

If its a neighbor he dont like, and his neighbors house is close to the line, and prevaling winds blow toward the neighbors, PINES may be the BEST:laughing:

We get along fine, but I don't care to see his house, not because it's ugly or anything, just for privacy, & he prob doesn't wanna see ours - He was there for ~7 years before I came along & started clearing, replacing the fence, etc. He used to have an uninhabited jungle next to him, now me & all my glory. And he's a nature lover, so he'd prob prefer to see woods rather than me & our house.

I did what Brin suggested. Are Leyland Cypress good for Florida, Beppington? If so, you'll have a hard time besting that approach.

Not sure, but Cypress grow in/next to water, don't they? If Leyland Cypress is anything like the Cypress trees I see along our rivers & lakes, should be fine.

Warm Climate Rhododendron

What a beautiful plant, you could hide in that..

Notice....Anyone wanting Privet Hedge ...Let me know..We consider it an insidious weed, much worse than cudzu....we spray it constantly and kill all we can ..it is taking over much of the Georgia countryside....If you want Privet let me know and you can come dig all you want ...just take the roots and all...

Hi, I missed this one posting, and refered back. Actually I bought one plant. Then I was able to go get some from a friend...Kudzu is defintely stronger here, and grows over 3 foot a day on all ends..But I concede, he {op}most likely does not want to start privet in his case...I am still planting it under the power lines here to muffle the new Harleys that have taken a liking to our "newly" designated Bike trail..as shown on all Tenn maps??Just tired of hearing them come out to the country and let it all sound out.. Plus it is thick, so my home will not be visable from that angle....

I have been cutting the pine trees a few at the time for over 30 yrs??. The ones closest to the house are 80 feet tall..I should have worked faster when I was trying to make a living..

It's all natural between my house location & the neighbor, just not a long enough distance to for enough nature to block the view. I have no intention of ever maintaining it because it's right next to & part of a "wetland" designated area, so anything I plant should not be invasive as I wouldn't be keeping up with it.

In fact, the crawling vine (ivy? Jasmine? Confederate's vine?) I mentioned considering in my OP ... I would need one that only goes up, not out, if such even exists ... ?

I think we may be speaking of different privet varieties. Chinese privet is highly invasive in my neck of the woods: Chinese/European Privet - Nonnative Invasive Plants of Southern Forests - A Field Guide for Identification and Control

How about Bamboo? Recently I saw and advertisement for different varieties that grow from 4 feet to 60 feet. Some spread and some don't. Sorry that I don't have the address. It was sort of pricey I thought.

Forty years ago I planted White, Scotch and Austrian Pine to serve as a windbreak and other natural considerations. The past ten years the pine wilt diseases have taken about 50 trees. It has kept me busy cutting and burning. This disease is rampant from the Rockies to the east coast so I understand.
