I shopping for a utility winch. Although I have a come-along, an AC-powered winch looks real handy. I see that Warn offers a pickup receiver platform too.
I was lookin at their 1,700 and 3,700 lb units.

Any comments?

An AC powered winch? I will assume you mean DC. I had a 6k Ramsey winch on my CJ5 Jeep, great winch takes ALOT OF POWER( DC amps). I had a dual battery set up and it still put a strain on it.
I like the pto driven logging winch on my tractor much better.
I do think that Warn makes a great winch too.
Good Luck!

The smaller winch the OP is looking at may not put as much strain on the battery. I have a 2500 lbs Warn on my ATV. Seemed to work OK. When I did a lot of ripping barbwire out of brush on our place I kept the engine running, though so I don't have a lot of test data against the battery.

I have a 3700 # Warn winch that I use on my Mahindra 2615, I have only one battery and I have never had any problems.

I've got a nice Warn that's 2" hitch mounted so I can easily move it between my truck and tractor (with a 3PH to 2" adapter) easily. Like most emergency equipment I bought it after I needed it and its presence has kept me from needing to use it. Blame me for the lack of snow in NJ, I put the loader and backhoe on the tractor too early in the season!

I have owned both the Superwinch and Warns. Between those two, the Warns have it hands down. More power, smoother and the just sound better. Superwinchs sound like they are self-destructing on a moderately heavy pull. I have never owned a Ramsey but have heard they are very good quality.

If you did mean AC Powered the Warn winches you are talking about are excellent. They Are 120 volt and are powered easily by a 5000 watt gen.

I work for a steel erection company and we have several of the 3700's that we use all of the time.

I don't know of a single breakdown in the 3 or 4 years that we have used them.

I have had 2 Warn winch's one on a jeep, and one on a atv, they both work flawlessly, I would go with warn.

PTO driven? Would that work on my 6-volt 8N? I'm looking for a new winch for my hay dolly.

The PTO-driven Logging winches are more than just the winch mechanism. They are decent sized 3 point hitch implements. Check out this link for one of the more popular makes: Farmi 351 Logging winch
