Was going to buy a used 4wd, but think a new 4025 2wd may be the way to go.

i have the 4wd and find that even trying to get into a load of chips many times the 2 wheel doesn't get into it enough or spins out more - put it in 4 wd and wow - it gets things done. the added traction of the 4 WD pays off immensely. had to use it in snow and muck yesterday and it was great!

It is the case. and the gear transmissions are near bullet proof... a lot less to go wrong with them and is why they are still on the market today... everything above is just to be a handicap or make things easier... but is easier actually better...

Never seen anybody burn out the clutch on a hydrostatic. Can't figure out why some people live in terror of a hydrostatic utility tractor yet see nothing wrong with a D10 Cat with a hydraulic drive.

I guess you'll need to post some specs of a modern 2wd 40 hp tractor that weighs 3000 lbs more than a modern 30 hp 4wd tractor. I am still in doubt.

My 2005 Kubota HST has also been bulletproof so I'm not sure if there is an advantage there. Manual gears is stone age in compact tractors. How do you feel about power steering?

I think we've muddied the waters so much in this thread that the OP has abandoned us.

Don't blame him.

When ya got rock solid members saying in the same post that they pay cash and that the OP should look at financing, he probably fled.

There is NO SUCH THING as 0% financing. Somewhere you paid for it. It's a great ploy though for the manufacturers, buyers eat it up like sugar. :)

I was responding to Eddiewalker who asked if it was true that sometimes it's better to finance than pay cash...which sometimes it is and I gave an example of my mortgage. And that when I bought my tractor, it wasn't in my best interest to finance.

I hope he hasn't abandoned us. He asked a legit question about 2wd vs 4wd /new vs used. I hope the answers he got were helpful.

One more thing to consider is resale. You may never plan to sell it, but if you ever end up needing to trade/sell it the 4WD tractor is going to be way easier to move.

this is true.

I have a mortgage and could pay it off but don't as my invested money makes more than I pay in mortgage interest, and I can deduct the mortgage.

Sometimes taking out mortgage and using the money to buy something like a tractor can be the cheapest way to go.

My tractor...... I paid cash....seemed the best thing to do at the time.

Morgage is an entirely different set of rules, tax laws being what they are.

On other aquisitions, If it appreciates, Buy, if it depreciates, Lease. (payments on a loan can be looked at as a lease. The bank owns the property until the note is satisfied after all ;-)

Sort of like your home, you really only "rent" from the town. Don't believe me? Just stop paying your taxes ;-)

Think of taxes as a purchase ... You're paying for services and representation.

For a loader tractor? Save some more $$$ and bring home a 4WD later. Purchase a 2WD loader tractor now and the sweet taste of a bargain will be rapidly be exchanged for disappointment.

My 4wd tractor is a godsend around my place. Many, many times I have gotten stuck in 2WD in what seemed the silliest places to do so. 4WD and locking differential is the only way I would go unless working only on hard, dry surfaces.
