Luckily I pulled my horse trailer before I ever got my flatbed. I learned to pull 'easy', and stop 'easy' for the animals sake.... carried that over to the flatbed.. etc.

I agree hauling live animals is the hardest. You have to be so gentle with the brakes and the accelerator. It makes pulling a little harder on the vehicle too. You can't hit it when you see a hill and you can't brake quick and get off the brakes so as not to heat them up or else you have horses smashing everything. You end up spending more time accelerating SO smooth and holding the braking over longer periods of time.

My wife is like the "horse jostling police",if I bump em' at all I get the evil eye. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Well, cowboydoc, you stated you have a CDL. I just pointed out that the Federal Government requires a CDL for GVWR's of 26,001lbs for trucks used for non-farm use and also excluding RVs.

I'm sure you CDL drivers already know that then. Whats the pin weight on a 30K gooseneck? Around 4000 to 4500 pounds? That would exceed most rear axle weight ratings a good bit and the GCWR, GVWR too, unless you have a new Dodge. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I have not weighed my truck yet, but its rated well over 4K in payload, not including the added options. Also, I'm not saying I never run heavy, but just because I or anybody else overloads their truck does not mean its all that safe. Plus, commercial haulers are cut much more slack if their axle weights are ok.

On the farm you make due with what you have. A half ton can pull huge loads, they can get bent frames too. My old 1500 Dodge is bent, been there, done that. Ever see a frame snap in two pieces? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( I once saw a dodge 2500 hauling a dozer on a gooseneck trailer with duals! That setup was unsafe at any speed.

I agree. A rubber tire 310 4X4 puts about 15K on a trailer. I hope it was a small dozer. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I love those F-550's though, great truck. 17K to 21K tow ratings..... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

With my horse trailer loaded I'm around 27k with 1920 lb. pin weight. With my cattle trailer loaded I'm usually close to 30k with a pin weight of 2300. On my hay trailer I'm 22-30k and completely loaded have a pin weight of 2100. The placement of the axles on the trailer and the # of them have alot to do with it.
