Wow, thanks to all of you for the quick and positive remarks. I feel much better. :D

I may get a bigger tractor at some point...perhaps when I buy more land. But for now, I'll just keep looking for the pieces I already thought I needed.

A couple of you commented on the condition. It is really in terrific shape and I also believe the price was right. Heck, my little JD lawn tractor cost almost as much.

All of your comments and encouragement are sincerely appreciated.

Those are wonderful tractors. My brother had one just like it and its what got me to wanting a tractor. I bought orange because I couldn't afford green, at least not at the local dealer. I tried to buy my brother's but that was a no go.

The dealer told me that this tractor is so small that it will not do anything well and suggested that it wouldn't even be able to handle a 4' shredder very well.
I would appreciate any feedback from someone who has used a tractor this se there.
I can handle the attachments yize. Is it truly too small to be of any use?

that's a nice tractor
the guys trying to pull a fast one
if your tractor was setting on his lot he wouldn't be telling me it's worthless.
my 15 HP BX1500 is smaller than your JD and will handle those attachments and so will your JD

I echo the others, What you need is a new dealer rather than a new tractor...

The 50 series tractors are as sturdy as they come and even a small tractor will do a lot of work.

Should you think otherwise, I'd pay you what you gave for it. :)

general rule of thumb around hear is about 5hp per foot of hog (or finish mower if truth be told)

my 27hp PTO? TC33 handles my 5' easy in thick pasture grass thats chest high. for mowing 1-2' tall stuff i could easly run 6'.

4' should be fine for your 650!

Is it power steering? If it is not it will have a single stage clutch and you will need an over running clutch on the pto shaft or the rotary cutter will over drive the tractor when you clutch the machine. The 650 will handle a 4 ft cutter in most conditions but not all. We sell a lot of cutters and always try to suggest a size that will work in all conditions. I have seen 15 ft cutters used on 50-60 hp tractors with no problem and have seen 100+ hp tractors have trouble with a 7 ft in some places. Don't be so hard on the dealer he may have had previous experience with a 650 that the customer was unhappy with and does not want to do that again. I would rather him tell me it would not work than say sure it will work only to find out when the grass gets going good it will not. You know he is in the business of selling. He did not let a paying customer walk away without a cutter on purpose. Your 650 looks nice how many hours on it? I traded for a 790 last week. It was power steering, 2 wheel drive, 2001 model, 169 hours, 30 hp, with a loader, and sold it for $5500.00.

Never heard of a "worthless" tractor. Surely that is a model or new brand, not a condition.

Yeah, do not get rid of it, keep it and get what you need, when you need it. I had an old '71 Power King 2WD with loader and all rear attachments. When I went to dealers looking for parts, one dealer told me the same thing. I think he either wanted to sell me something, or buy it. He had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to sell it just as I was walking out of the door. I used that tractor in all kinds of smaller places, and like a mouse I made sure that I took a smaller piece of the cheese when I did larger projects with it:)
