Was told my tractor was almost worthless

A friend of mine has a 650 with 4wd. He uses a 4' brush hog on his. He mowed my place with it before I bought my TC18. He also pulls a 5' finish mower with it.

WORTHLESS! Wish someone had told me 20 years ago before I did all the work with my 650.

"I just traded my JD 650 (17hp) for a JD 2320 (24hp). I had the 650 for 20 years. I own a small horse farm of 10 acres and the 650 did every thing I needed to do from digging footings for an addition on the house, building a pole barn, burying a couple horses, plowing snow, using a 5 ft landscape rake, posthole digger, painting the house (using the FEL for as ladder), 5 ft rear mount mower etc. The smaller tractors do really well, I feel there is a place for larger tractors but a 3-acre lot is not one of them. A smaller tractor always has a place and things you can do with it, not so with the larger tractors."

If I saw one in that condition for that price I would buy it immediately.

No way. Don't tell me my machine is junk or it's "worthless". I don't care what kind of experience he's had before, that's a great machine. Sure, it won't pull a batwing through chest high saplings and from the sounds of it the dealer didn't know what he wanted to do with it and may not have even asked.

He's in the business of selling alright... I can't type what he's selling though. There's a way to tell someone that they can't do what they want with what they have and that salesman sure in the heck never learned that in "Sales 101".

I stopped by an AG implement dealer today to see if I could find a 4' shredder for my JD650. I posted about this purchase in another thread.

The dealer told me that this tractor is so small that it will not do anything well and suggested that it wouldn't even be able to handle a 4' shredder very well. I'm a bit down. I planned on running the shredder and getting a small box blade to maintain about 75 feet of gravel drive. I also planned on using it to hoist the occasional log onto my lumber mill.

I would appreciate any feedback from someone who has used a tractor this size. Is it truly too small to be of any use?

I know NOTHING about tractors. I know this one is green and runs perfect. It's been garaged its whole life. I've got $2400 including new brakes, oil, anti-freeze and seat.

Your tractor can handle a 4' shredder and box blade just fine.


It sounds to me like the "dealer" is trying to touse you into buying an entire another rig to do what you need to do. Don't buy it.......don't buy from him.


You have other options for fitting out your tractor and use them.

We had a 4' deere cutter on our 650 and also had a 4' gill boxblade. It worked fine. JC
