Yep, I am heading back up there in a few minutes, I am using our L5740 with a Land Pride RCR2672 and a M8540 with a pull type Woods DS1260. Anything to big to cut my son is pushing over and piling with a tracked skid loader. We have to keep in touch by radio as sometimes I can't see him or him me as he is so low. I am also pushing some of the Autumn Olive as they don't have a deep root structure, I don't mow the really big ones.

We started last Friday. We will then spray some areas and I will smooth out the holes and tracks from the loader with the box blade and fill in some washouts we have found.

I took two pictures, one from each side of the road. I cannot SEE the washboarding today (must be due to the rain last night?) but it was still bumpy as I drove over it.

The easment is very narrow, there is not room to get the tractor sideways or at a 45 degree angle as someone was mentioning (not much at least).

In the distance you can see my gate, and the horse fence gate beyond that...

Be well,

David

Looking at the photos, you should be able to roll at an angle (even if not 45 degrees). For example from your gate, work towards the bend - start on the far left side of the track and aim to finish on the far right by the time you are half way to the bend, and repeat along the whole track at this angle. It may seem very time consuming - but will be worth while, especially if you are going to the expense of relaying the track.

There are lots of cheaper / quicker solutions to provide a temporary "quick-fix" including the dragbox, however if you want to solve the problem, the only way is to dig up and re-lay the track.

Technically it is not my property, and I am happy to maintain it, but redoing the track might be over my head and outside ofmy budget also... But I want to understand it and your explanations make sense.

I appreciate it sir.

What part of Spain is La Romana in? I bet it is beautiful there...

I have had a gravel driveway for 20 years and no washboarding. I do have a few persistent potholes.

Driveway was constructed over pit run rock and compacted with a D-7 Cat driving over it, then 3/4" minus gravel spread on top. I do have to add more gravel now and then as it does disappear somehow.

Wife drives it at about 20 mph; I go about 15.

OTOH, I don't see much washboarding on other domestic roads around here--might be something to do with the soil. Where I worked in the woods over different soils and lots of log trucks we did see it.

David, unless i am on your ignore list. I have maintained a gravel driveway my entire life just about. i have never lived on anything else. All the advise is great and lots of things to learn. The bottom line is as you mentioned it is not your road, you are sharing it. as i said before speed kills a gravel road and i know that getting people to slow down is impossible same as getting people to contribute to the maintenance. The best way to maintain a gravel road is continuous maintenance.
A stone rake is the best for this, drag the road on a schedule depending on the amount of traffic. The stone rake will keep the gravel loose every so often until more gravel is necessary, my neighbors except for 2 have a few loads delivered every 2 or 3 years. The strange thing about this is the 2 that do not contribute are the ones that race in and out doing the most damage.

La Romana is in Alicante province - we're in the mountains about 40 minutes inland from the town of Alicante. It is a dry beauty around here - lots of vines, almonds and olives, but not mush else that's green for much of the year! I do love it here, but miss the green rolling fields of the UK - I would really love to visit the USA sometime, as from what I have seen on posters photo's here at tbn, much of your countryside seems idylic

I can totally appreciate that you don't want to spend money on a right of way across someone elses land - as a thought (it might not work) you could try the box grader (ideally with ripper tines) along it, and try to put a bit of shape back into the track - from the photo's it looks like there is little or no camber to help shed the rain? You can get the grader to build up the centre of the track to form a camber by adjusting one link arm slightly higher than the other. If there is no budget for a roller, then maybe use your tractor to compact the surface when you're finished - it won't do as good a job, but may well meet your needs for light traffic :)
