Waste UDT disposal

We have 2 dumpsters at work. 1 for garbage 2nd for flat clean dry cardboard. it is forbidden to put garbage in the cardboard dumpster. When the truck comes they both go in at the same time. what a joke.

The lack of common sense is amazing at times, especially with subjects like recycling.

I help out several times a year on our local monthly recycle day. Once several years ago I was in a conversation with an employee and another volunteer. They were talking about if the earth was going to survive much longer because of a lack of recycling! I thought they were a little wacky.

I took in about five gallons of anti freeze to the county recycle hazardous collection day and they were all dressed up in bio hazard suits! I said it was just anti freeze, but they acted like it was radioactive.

Also I am a trustee on our township board. Sometimes have trouble with a lack of common sense there too. Seems many people haven't got a clue how things work in nature and by humans.

Perhaps due to too much specialty anymore. People just see a fragment that they know and very few see the whole picture.

BINGO, that is my point. I used to recycle my cardboard and plastic bottles until I saw my trash guys dumping everything in my special colored coded recycle bins in one trash truck. Unless they follow the rules (using everyone’s tax money) the people in the community will not follow the rules or lack there of.

The used oil is another joke as I stated. The problem is the people that take the used oil whine and complain about this and that. It is more trouble to the customer (tax payer here) so they have the mentality of “just dumping it in the trash”. Unless they fix the system and make it easy and not a “project” for disposing of the used oil, people will take alternate routes to dispose of it. It is not right but the system is failing if we the people need to worry about some person changing the rules. Or you get the people that say different things to everyone.

Most times the people at the dump like to push the recycle propaganda since they need to justify there jobs.

GSXR 1100, be careful when you watch the truck, here they have several compartments on the truck, part garbage, part recycling.

I think it is worthwhile as they used to have a dump near us. There is a huge problem finding new locations for dumps now so I'd like to see as much waste as possible diverted.

I have seen core sample studies of dumps and using newspapers for dating they pulled up 50 year old lettuce that looked the same as teh day it went in the ground. Nothing goes away in a clay capped modern dump.

We just got new trucks last year and each truck is 100% each item as I have seen and was told per out city officials. I even called City Hall a number of times to voice my concerns and the person on the line said this will happen if the other guys truck is full, end of route etc..blah blah….typical state/city response.

I said so when my trash is full can I empty it into my recycle bin? No comment on his part. As far as I am concerned it can go both ways. There were times when the people do not even show up for a complete street to do their job! Again, I am all for the environment but give me some people that can do the job correctly 100% of the time, not sometimes. One word in my eyes, outsource.

Mike, is Mass. really that far behind? I would have thought, you know Harvard and all that stuff you would be a bit more advanced there. We have had recycling with either compartmentized trucks or different trucks for a couple decades.

"I am all for the environment" Then remember to take your nicads to the proper disposal place, the garbage can is not it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Harvard and each city are not integral to each other. Really Harvard is average for schools now in this area, nothing new. It depends on the town or city and their respective budget. Also the amount of money they get from the state helps or lack there of.

Our city just bought trucks (like $400K each) that only need a driver for trash. They have the automated arm deal. The state of CT has had them for years along with other cities in MA. The cardboard is a green truck with HUGE labels on it and the plastic is a green and white truck that HUGE recycle labels on it. The recycle trucks do not even correlate to trash trucks. These older trucks where the same for about 20 years in my city. Not kidding either.

That is why I am so bitter on our city. It is a joke. My taxes doubled and have a nice shiny trash barrel to show for it. WHOA! Nevermind cleaning house in City hall. I know The Big Dig KILLED out state with money and now we are paying for it. Our city needs bridges (around 6 to 8 from minor to major) and out roads are poor. I would love to see where my taxes go because I do not see it.

My friends father work on the trash plate in Springfield Ma (they do several towns/city for trash) and it is amazing what they do. It is all burned.

We got the "90 gallon" trash cans around 1981. You could load them up with many hundreds of pounds. You would only get caught overloading it if you faced it the wrong way at the curb, parked it to close to something or if the one armed loader could not lift it. Our recycle trucks use the same thing. You have 3 trash style cans. The 90 gallon is now for green waste like clippings. Then there is the recyle one that takes plastic, cans, paper etc and finally, the smallest one now that takes the usual crap. You can also put oil out on the curb in a sealed container.. We also have collection days for pesticides, paint, etc. Our oil recyle centers take a max of 5 gallons a day from a customer. I guess they figure any more hten that and your a commerical setup. Anyway, probably a whole lot more then you wanted to know, but we have done it for so long this way I have forgotten how the old way was.
