Looks like I shoud start thinking about putting a wind generator on my farm. Anybody knows about 20 kW or larger for afordable money.

OK...you are about to get me started.......these m.fer's that keep saying we all need to go green, REALLY means that we need to stuff some green in thier pockets!!! I priced a complete self sufficient solar system for my home (8 years old) and it was $126,000.00 to come off of the grid! Wind power was a little cheaper at $50,000.00 to be totally self sufficient. State reimbursment is a joke at $2000.00......please, if T Booze, ooops I mean T . Boone wants us to pony up for some renewable energy...MAKE IT F#()KING AFFORDABLE!!!!!!!

Eventually Fossil Fuels will be used up and the lights will go out!!!!

I have payed attention to how much world oil reserve there is in the news for the past 10 years . Couple of things concern me. One is the world reserve hasn't changed in 10 years. We are consuming more fuels as the population increases. How can the world reserve not change and consumption increase, doesn't compute.

Second thing is the refineries are at full capacity. If one refinery goes down for any unscheduled interruption economists raise the price of fuel. There is no bank of refined fuels it is used up soon as it is processed.

If any of you knew that in one year from now you would not have a job because you were to be layed off would you not plan for the future. We need another alternative to fossil fuel.

Eventually Fossil Fuels will be used up and the lights will go out!!!!

Amen that we need to find alternatives to fossil fuels. My concern is that most of what has been shoved down our throats as "alternative fuels" really don't do much to improve our situation. I'd love to see the stats on how much energy and resource it takes to build a solar panel or a windmill, etc. vs. the fossil fuel it saves.

I'm also waiting for the big exposé article to come out in some magazine about how the stuff that goes into the batteries for all these hybrid vehicle isn't any better than the harm from fossil fuels, etc.

The only other real source of energy that seems to make any sense to me is nuclear energy. Don't get me started on the public brainwashing with nucleophobic paranoia that's keeping the nuclear industry repressed. We'll be here all day.

That being said, I have more faith in the human capacity to innovate than the typical doomsdayer environut. The lights won't go out. If they do it will only be for a short period of time. There are too many clever entrepreneurs who will see a chance to make a buck. They'll figure something out. Maybe it will be pig farms that collect the methane gas to power post apocalyptic dune buggys driven by Mel Gibson. ;)

I completely agree with your sentiment. In example, I looked at Bergey WG and don't understand how they can ask so much money for machine so simple (compare it with complexity of a car). I figured that the WG, assuming constant cost of electricity, would pay for itself in about 21 years.

On the other hand people buy Porche or Cadillac and nobody questions the prudency of such investment. So I guess I can buy an overpriced WG and keep driving my old beater until it blows up.

Government subsidies as a rule don't help the end user but the manufacturers. They just increase their prices.

Shazam!

126000$, divided by.. lets say.. a power bill of 200$ per month ( we are trying to be green right? ).. that equals 630 months worth of power bills. At the going rate of 12 months in a year, that's a whopping 52 and a half years to break even!!!

I'll be dead before ever coming out on that deal.. not to mention.. that would assume no other maintenance or replacement costs to the equipment in that 52.5 years.. considering they probably aren't built like an antique tractor that -CAN- go 50 years on a oil change and no repairs... I'd say that there is some "maddock" math going on in the greene people's minds.. ;)

Hmmm, let's see.

What are the only two sources of electricity that are 100% dependable, generate no carbon as a byproduct and are NEVER ALLOWED TO BE MADE AGAIN?

Duh -> Nuclear and hydro-electric from a dam.

Why not? The Greenie Weenies don't like them. The liberals in this country want us to be more like Europe, but in France you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Nuke cooling tower. They get the BULK of their electricity from nuke. Idiotic fear of nuke disaster has stopped all progress in this country.

And hydro-electric? Oh, can't make a lake where Joe Six-pack can take the kids fishing! Might kill the snail darter. Bah.

Did you know that each coal fired electric plant puts out MORE radiation than TMI and the Russian plant did when they melted down? It's true. Background radiation in the coal is 100% released when the coal is burned.

The idea of utilizing inexpensive and readily available domestic resources to produce alternative energy has been one of the long standing goals of the Department of Energy (DOE). As I'm sure you are all aware, the mission of the DOE is to 殿dvance energy technology and promote related innovation in the United States? This effort has long been hampered by a lack of adequate funding and the nations long reliance on cheap oil; much of this oil is imported from foreign sources which contributes to our national debt. The instability in the Middle East, as well as volatility in the commodities markets leading to wide fluctuations in fuel prices at the consumer level, makes the mission of the DOE a matter of critical importance. The potential for disruption of our economy that this volatility poses could reach historical levels not previously seen in our lifetime and ultimately lead to a national emergency. To assure that things don't get worse before they get better, the President will be sending a new legislative initiative to Congress and urging passage on an emergency basis. The legislation will authorize the President to order the Secretary of the Treasury to immediately release funds from already passed stimulus authorizations at a level sufficient to assure that our dependence on foreign oil is eliminated forever. To assure that the taxpayers money is not wasted and used wisely, the President will appoint a panel to study technology proposals and recommend those with significant potential that have not been developed because of past investment limitations. The group will be known as the Better Use of Limited Liability Stimulus Heavy Investment Targets (********) panel and report directly to the President by the third quarter of FY 2010. The President will ask a prominent person with past government experience, environmental sensitivity, and significant familiarity with existing emerging technologies to head this important panel. The panel will be non-political, bipartisan in nature, and use the best available science to determine appropriate targets for funding.

Although initial funding will be significant (initially limited to approximately $100 billion), it will represent only a small percentage of the overall stimulus packages already authorized; since the spending is already authorized it will be budget neutral. This authorization of investment will have the added benefit of creating millions of new well paying jobs in research & development, manufacturing, and installation and significantly contribute to our GDP; it is well know that every new job also has a multiplier effect by injecting more money into the economy and creating demand for ancillary goods and services. All of the new well paying jobs will result in enhanced tax revenues which will provide the taxpayers with significant return on investment, referred to by the Director of the IRS as the Cash Reserves Account Collections Kitty (CRACK); Revenue Intensive Congressional Ham (RICH) projects are largely dependent upon CRACK funding.

I urge all of you to contact your Congressmen and ask them to support this critical initiative without undue debate or amendment, and immediately vote for authorization as soon as it is received from the President. The majority of Congress obviously has a great interest in protecting our interests as the ******** panel will do, as well as the CRACK which funds important RICH programs.

I confirm that statistic. Even if you never took the smokestack emmission into consideration, more radiation is released just in the mining of coal than from all the nuclear operations... Radon.

The American public's opinions and emotions surrounding nuclear energy are based more on information from Marvel Comics than from any other source.

To my knowledge, there has never been a documented peer reviewed case of an Incredible Hulk or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle in the real world, but that still seems to be the biggest contributor to fear of nuclear energy.
